Palantir Technologies

Overview

Palantir Technologies Inc. is a software company founded in 2003 in California, USA, that supplies platforms which integrate and analyze vast amounts of heterogeneous data to support decision-making. It began with government, defense, and intelligence agencies as its main customers and has since expanded into private industries such as manufacturing, finance, healthcare, and energy, and in 2020 it went public through a direct listing on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: PLTR). Under the philosophy of "eliminating data silos and accelerating decision-making in the field," it operates product lines including Gotham, Foundry, Apollo, and AIP (Artificial Intelligence Platform).

Founding Background and History

The name Palantir comes from the "Seeing Stones" that appear in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. It was co-founded by Peter Thiel, Alex Karp, Stephen Cohen, Joe Lonsdale, and Nathan Gettings, and its early funding was invested by In-Q-Tel, the CIA's venture investment arm. It grew in tandem with U.S. intelligence agencies' demand for counterterrorism intelligence analysis in the mid-2000s, and has since continuously expanded the share of revenue from its commercial sector.

Core Product Lines

  • Gotham: A platform for government, defense, and intelligence agencies that connects distributed data sources to support operational planning and threat analysis.
  • Foundry: A data integration and operations platform for private enterprises, used for supply chain, production, and logistics optimization. It is also used to implement digital twins at manufacturing sites.
  • Apollo: A continuous deployment and operations automation system spanning cloud, on-premises, and air-gapped environments.
  • AIP (Artificial Intelligence Platform): The latest flagship product that securely connects generative AI and large language models (LLMs) to enterprise data and workflows, and has become the core driver of the company's growth since 2023.

Business Model and Customer Structure

Unlike traditional SaaS, Palantir conducts a consulting-integrated sales approach of "pilot → expansion" tailored to the customer's environment. Contract sizes are large and barriers to entry are high, and once deployed, switching costs are high, so long-term customer retention is evaluated as a strength. Revenue is divided between the government sector (the U.S. Department of Defense, allied governments, etc.) and the commercial sector, and recently the commercial sector's growth rate has been outpacing that of the government sector.

Controversies and Criticism

Ethical criticism has been steadily raised over concerns about privacy infringement, controversy over mass surveillance technology, and contracts with ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and others. In addition, high valuation, a government-dependent revenue structure, and related-party governance issues are also mentioned as major points of contention among investors.

Latest Trends

Since the release of AIP in 2023, Palantir has rapidly expanded its customer pipeline through a short-term experiential sales program called "AIP Bootcamp." In 2024, it was included in the S&P 500 index, and driven by surging demand for generative AI and the expansion of large-scale contracts with the U.S. Department of Defense, its share price and market capitalization soared, entering the ranks of large U.S. tech stocks. In 2025, it is putting an architecture centered on "Ontology" based on AIP at the forefront, strengthening an "AI operating system" strategy that enables LLMs to operate in combination with an enterprise's actual data, permissions, and workflows. Expansion of government and industry customers in Europe, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific region, as well as partnerships in defense AI, drones, and space, are also emerging as major growth axes.
