Q3 Operating Profit

A company's operating profit for July–September, a key quarterly indicator for gauging core-business profitability and the direction of annual performance.

Q3 Operating Profit

Overview

Q3 operating profit (third-quarter operating profit) is the operating profit a company earns in the third quarter of its fiscal year (typically July 1–September 30), calculated by subtracting cost of goods sold and selling, general and administrative expenses from revenue. Because it most directly reveals the profitability of the core business, it is treated as a key indicator in quarterly earnings announcements in the Korean stock market; for corporations with a December fiscal year-end, cumulative third-quarter performance serves as a barometer for the direction of full-year performance.

Key Details

Definition and Calculation Method

Operating profit is calculated in the income statement as revenue − cost of goods sold − selling, general and administrative expenses. Cost of goods sold consists of costs directly incurred in producing products, such as raw material costs, labor costs, and manufacturing overhead; selling, general and administrative expenses include salaries, advertising expenses, depreciation, and R&D expenses. Adding non-operating gains and losses (interest expense, equity-method gains/losses, gains/losses on asset disposal, foreign exchange gains/losses, etc.) and corporate tax yields net income. Thus, operating profit can be distinguished as showing “how much was earned from the core business,” while net income shows “how much was ultimately left.” The operating margin (%), calculated by dividing operating profit by revenue, is widely used to compare profitability across industries and companies.

Why Q3 Results Receive Particular Attention

First, it is the first quarterly report card after the semiannual report closing the first half (January–June). Second, cumulative performance through the third quarter often accounts for roughly 70–75% of full-year performance, serving as a basis for adjusting annual guidance. Third, because the fourth quarter often concentrates one-off factors such as year-end inventory adjustments, performance bonuses, and budget execution, the third-quarter figure is sometimes interpreted as the last quarter showing recurring earnings capacity. Fourth, it becomes material for shareholder return plans such as dividend policy and share buybacks.

Announcement Schedule and Earnings Season

Under the Capital Markets Act, quarterly reports must be submitted within 45 days after the end of the quarter, so the statutory submission deadline for the third-quarter report of a December fiscal-year corporation is mid-November (typically November 14). Market attention, however, focuses on the preliminary earnings disclosures in early to mid-October, which come earlier. Large-cap stocks typically release preliminary operating profit first and later disclose confirmed results and detailed segment figures, and this period is called the third-quarter earnings season.

Interpretation Methods

  • Comparison with consensus: Beating the average of securities firm forecasts (consensus) is assessed as an earnings surprise, while falling short is an earnings shock.
  • Year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter comparison: For industries with seasonality, both year-on-year (YoY) and quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) comparisons should be considered.
  • Operating margin trend: Whether the margin improves, rather than the revenue growth rate, becomes a measure of qualitative growth.
  • Removing one-off factors: Inventory valuation losses, litigation provisions, performance bonuses, and gains/losses on disposal of tangible assets should be separated from underlying performance.
  • Exchange rates and raw material prices: In industries with high export shares, the KRW/USD exchange rate and raw material prices are major drivers of changes in operating profit.

Industry Characteristics

Semiconductors are driven by memory contract prices, utilization rates, and inventory cycles; for automobiles, sales incentives, exchange rates, and the effect of new model launches are key. For shipbuilding, dock utilization and thick plate prices are variables; for refining and chemicals, refining margins and product spreads; for telecommunications, rate plans and marketing costs; and for retail and food and beverage, consumer sentiment and cost ratios. For biotech and pharmaceuticals, it is necessary to check how technology export contract payments are reflected in non-operating income or operating profit, while for gaming, the success of new releases and the timing of marketing expenditure greatly sway quarterly results.

Limitations and Caveats

Operating profit can vary depending on accounting policies and cost allocation methods, and the figure can also differ depending on differences between consolidated and separate financial statements and how discontinued operations gains/losses are presented. In capital-intensive industries with large depreciation, EBITDA and net income should also be considered, and it is common for net income to decline even when operating profit increases if interest expense and foreign exchange losses are large. Above all, it should be taken into account that preliminary results may differ from confirmed figures.

Latest Trends

The biggest topic of the 2024–2025 third-quarter earnings season was demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for AI servers. In Q3 2024, Samsung Electronics (삼성전자) recorded preliminary operating profit in the KRW 9 trillion range and SK Hynix (SK하이닉스) in the KRW 7 trillion range, confirming a recovery in the memory market, and the upswing spread to semiconductor equipment and component companies. In 2025, U.S. tariff policy, discussions over tariffs on semiconductor items, and concerns about Chinese oversupply emerged as variables, and third-quarter operating profit forecasts for the automobile and auto parts sectors showed a downward adjustment trend. In addition, as the share of individual investors and active ETFs increased, stock price volatility on the day of preliminary earnings announcements tended to expand markedly, and the practice of companies disclosing segment operating profit in greater detail through conference calls and earnings materials has also strengthened. The impact of the KRW/USD exchange rate, oil prices, and the interest rate paths of major countries on third-quarter margins is also an item that continues to be monitored.
