A Korean expression announcing that the state of being able to do something has been completed, used as a confirmation, a chant, or a declaration of resolve

Ready (준비됐다)

Overview

"준비됐다" (junbidwaetda) is the conjugated form of the Korean verb 준비되다 ("to be ready") combined with the pre-final ending -었-, which marks past tense or completion; it is an expression announcing that the state needed to begin some task has already been established. Its uses range very widely, from confirmation questions in everyday conversation to broadcast countdowns, the start of a game match, and the chant heard just before a sports competition begins. Thanks to its short syllable count and clear rhythm, it functions especially strongly as a chant or a cue.

Etymology and form

준비 (準備) is a Sino-Korean word meaning "preparing and having in place in advance," and with the suffixal verb 되다 attached to it, the intransitive verb 준비되다 is formed. When the pre-final ending -었- (past/completion) and the final ending -다 are added, it becomes 준비되었다, and in spoken language the vowel ㅓ contracts, yielding 준비됐다. In other words, 준비됐다 is a contraction of 준비되었다, and both its written form and its pronunciation are firmly established in everyday use. It follows the same contraction rule as other conjugations of 되다 in Korean (됐다, 됐어, 됐습니다).

Grammatical characteristics

Whereas 준비했다 is a transitive construction emphasizing the active action of the agent, 준비됐다 is an intransitive construction focused on the "state" of having finished preparing and on that "completion." Thus "내가 준비했다" ("I prepared") conveys who did it, while "준비됐다" conveys the state of being ready to start now. The interrogative forms vary in level of honorification according to the interlocutor and situation, as in "준비됐어?", "준비됐나요?", and "준비되셨습니까?", while in hortative and imperative use it combines with conditional clauses, as in "준비됐으면 출발하자" ("If you're ready, let's go") and "준비되면 말해" ("Tell me when you're ready"). Pronounced with an exclamatory intonation, it becomes a signal word in itself.

Usage and pragmatics

Its most typical uses can be divided into three. First, "준비됐어?" as a question checking the other person's state. Second, "3, 2, 1, 준비됐다!" as a signal or chant announcing a start, which frequently appears combined with countdowns in broadcasting, performances, games, and sports coverage. Third, "난 준비됐다" ("I'm ready") as a declaration of one's resolve or determination. The distinguishing feature of this expression is that the same phrase simultaneously performs these opposing pragmatic functions of question, signal, and declaration.

Comparison with similar expressions

준비 완료 has a strongly businesslike, report-like tone; 각오됐다 emphasizes psychological resolve; and the English borrowing 레디 (Ready) emphasizes the atmosphere of a chant or a sports setting. 마음의 준비 ("mental preparation") is an idiomatic expression meaning emotional readiness, contrasting with 준비됐다, which refers to physical preparation. Changing it to an honorific form such as "준비됐습니다!" allows it to be used in formal settings as well.

Popular culture and memes

On the internet and in broadcasting, the short, rhythmic quality of this expression remains alive, and it is frequently consumed in clip form combined with variety-show subtitles, sports highlights, and game streamers' remarks. The rhythm of the four syllables of "준비됐다" fits well with subtitle timing, making it easy to use as the hook of a short video. In addition, ironic use is common, in which a situation is not prepared at all yet someone says "준비됐다" anyway.

Recent trends

In 2024–2025, cases have increased in which remarks of the "준비됐다" type are re-edited and used as the opening hook of short-form videos. In sports coverage and game broadcasting, as automatic subtitle and speech synthesis technologies have become widespread, a trend has also taken hold in which a spoken "준비됐다" is subtitled in real time and displayed on viewers' screens. In addition, bilingual chants mixing "Ready" with the Korean "준비됐다" are becoming an established practice in esports and creator content, and content that reproduces this expression using synthetic voices made with generative AI is also appearing. Meanwhile, in a social atmosphere that emphasizes "preparation," a tendency is also observed for the word to be reused as a title in self-development content.
