Birth and Growth
Sam Kim is a Korean-American born and raised near Seattle to Korean parents. He naturally learned music as a child through church music and American R&B/soul albums, and is known to have begun composing and singing while teaching himself guitar. His bilingual environment, speaking both English and Korean, greatly influenced his lyrical world and way of communicating on stage.
K-pop Star Season 3 and Joining Antenna
He participated in SBS’s K-pop Star Season 3 in 2013 and drew attention from judges and viewers with stable guitar playing, his distinctive husky tone, and emotional expressiveness, advancing to the final and taking the runner-up spot. The winner at the time was Bernard Park. After the program ended, he signed an exclusive contract with Antenna, founded by Yoo Hee-yeol, and embarked on the path of an official artist.
Album Activities
He made his official debut with his first EP, I Am Sam, in 2016. Then, in 2018, he released his first full-length album, Sun and Moon, establishing his identity as a singer-songwriter centered on self-composed songs, and in 2021 he released the EP The Juice, showing more refined production and diverse genre experiments. His albums have consistently received favorable reviews for freely moving between English and Korean lyrics and for the harmony of acoustic guitar with jazz and R&B rhythms.
OSTs and Public Recognition
In 2016, “Who Are You,” an OST song for the tvN drama Goblin, gained great popularity and greatly raised his public recognition. He has since participated in OSTs for various dramas, and “Love Me Like That,” the OST for the 2021 JTBC drama Nevertheless, has continued to be loved. His OST work, in which his soft tone fits well with the emotions of the dramas, has led to his reputation as an “OST powerhouse.”
Musical Style and Evaluation
His music is based on R&B, soul, and acoustic pop, and his guitar playing and stability on live stages are cited as strengths. Rather than flashy technique, his vocals leave space and his arrangements are understated, and his song construction, which delicately builds up emotional nuances, is often mentioned. This style is evaluated as an example showing the point of contact between the domestic indie/R&B scene and popular music.
Recent Trends
As of 2024–2025, Sam Kim has been steadily active mainly through singles, OSTs, and collaboration tracks rather than full-length albums. Live and acoustic content via streaming platforms and YouTube is contributing to the expansion of his overseas fandom, and he continues to appear at domestic and international festivals and solo concerts. Recently, in the K-R&B and indie scenes, there is a clear trend of singer-songwriter-type artists not limited to a particular genre broadening their contact with the public through collaborations and OSTs, and Sam Kim is establishing himself as one of the representative examples of this trend. In addition, the trend of live-centered activities combining self-composed songs and session performances increasing an artist’s musical credibility also aligns with his moves.
