Same-Day Trip to China
Overview
Same-day trip to China (Korean: 당일치기 방중; 當日―訪中) refers to a form of travel or business trip in which a person departs from Korea, visits a Chinese city, and returns home on the same day. In November 2024, when China allowed short-term visa-free entry to Korea and several other countries, Shanghai, Qingdao, and Dalian—reachable from Incheon International Airport in the 1–2 hour range—emerged as 'same-day destinations.' Short flight times, the institutional condition of visa-free entry, and airlines' increased frequencies have combined to establish it as a distinct consumption and travel trend.
Key Details
Background: Visa-Free Policy and Air Accessibility
The biggest premise behind same-day trips to China is the simplification of entry procedures. From November 2024, China allowed Korean ordinary passport holders visa-free entry for up to 15 days, and the scope of application and permitted stay were later expanded in stages. Unlike in the past, when visa issuance usually took about a week and involved costs, it became possible to secure only a plane ticket, book the day before, and depart the next day.
Physical distance is also decisive. From Incheon International Airport, Shanghai Pudong is about 2 hours away, Qingdao about 1 hour 30 minutes, Dalian about 1 hour 10 minutes, and Yantai and Weihai around 1 hour. Because the travel time is similar to that of long domestic routes, a schedule of morning departure and evening return is not burdensome. The well-developed public transit infrastructure connecting airport arrival halls and city centers—including maglev trains, subways, and airport railways—also supports same-day trips.
Representative Destinations and Consumption Patterns
The most popular destination is undoubtedly Shanghai. Urban tourist sites such as The Bund, Nanjing Road, and Xintiandi are reachable from the airport by subway within an hour, and unit prices for consumption at large shopping malls, convenience stores, and cafes are relatively low, making the city useful for 'food and shopping expedition' courses. Qingdao has a beer museum, beaches, and old downtown walking courses arranged compactly, making it suitable for a half-day itinerary. Dalian has a high share of business visitors thanks to its geographic proximity.
Consumption patterns are summed up as 'short and intense.' Instead of minimizing airfare and transport costs, travelers concentrate purchases of food and beverages, snacks, daily necessities, cosmetics, and similar items locally. In particular, 'stockpile-style shopping' stands out: buying groceries, fruit, nuts, teas, and other goods cheaper than in Korea in bulk and checking them as baggage, which leads to interest in checked baggage weight and duty-free limits.
Diversification of Travel Types
Same-day trips to China are largely divided into three branches. First is the pure tourism type, which selects one or two specific restaurants or tourist sites and covers them with a minimal route. Second is the shopping and purchasing type, which plans routes around large supermarkets or wholesale markets. Third is the business and work type, a compressed schedule involving a morning meeting with a local partner and a return in the afternoon. Recently, an 'exhibition and performance viewing' type has been added, and cases of seeing an exhibition or performance held in Shanghai and returning the same day are also increasing.
Economic Effects and Industry Ripple Effects
The spread of same-day trips to China acted as a direct benefit to the aviation industry. As load factors on China routes recovered, airlines increased frequencies on short-haul routes such as Incheon–Shanghai and Incheon–Qingdao or redeployed smaller aircraft. Travel platforms, card companies, and telecommunications companies launched China-only roaming plans and currency exchange and payment promotions one after another, and services linking local payment apps were also expanded. On the other hand, concerns are also raised about domestic consumption leaking overseas and about intensifying competition with domestic tourist destinations.
Precautions and Controversies
Even with visa-free entry, immigration screening may confirm the purpose of visit and accommodation and return tickets, so it is safer to prepare the return boarding pass and itinerary materials. In addition, same-day schedules are highly vulnerable to flight delays. If an afternoon or later departure is delayed, the return may slip to the next day, so it is better to allow a buffer when choosing an evening return flight. Also, because some items are subject to entry restrictions, quarantine regulations should be checked in advance, and pre-configuration is needed to use local payment and transport apps.
Latest Trends
After visa-free entry was implemented in late 2024, the number of Korean visitors to China showed a rapid recovery in 2025, and the travel industry interprets this as a 'reshaping of short-haul overseas travel.' As short-haul demand that had been concentrated on Japan and Southeast Asia dispersed to Chinese cities, many one-night, two-day and same-day products combining weekends and half-day annual leave were launched. Airlines are introducing early departure and late-night return schedules on some routes to target same-day demand, and travel platforms are prominently offering 'dawn departure, midnight return' packages.
At the same time, China is also pursuing improved payment convenience, expanded Korean-language guidance at major tourist sites, and simplified duty-free and refund procedures to attract Korean tourists. However, because the visa-free policy may be adjusted according to reciprocity and diplomatic circumstances, the implementation period and permitted length of stay must be checked before departure. Experts believe that because same-day trips to China are sensitive to institutional changes, whether the policy continues will determine the direction of demand after 2026.
