Key Details
Life and Early Career
She was born on March 7, 1961, in Nara Prefecture, Japan. After graduating from Kobe University's Faculty of Business Administration, she entered the Matsushita Institute of Government and Management (松下政経塾) to study politics, and later gained experience as a congressional aide in the United States, developing into a politician with an international outlook. In the late 1980s she also worked as a television broadcaster, and she entered politics in the early 1990s. She first won election to the House of Representatives in 1993 and entered the Diet; she has since won multiple elections and consolidated her local constituency base.
Political Career
As a member of the House of Representatives, she has been elected more than 10 times cumulatively and expanded her standing as a policy expert within the LDP. She served in cabinet posts in the Koizumi and Abe cabinets, holding key positions including Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications and Minister in charge of Economic Security. She has also held core party posts in the LDP's policy-making process, including Chairperson of the Policy Research Council and Chairperson of the Political Affairs Research Council. With deep political ties to former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, she is called a successor to the Abe line, and has been active in solidarity activities with conservative lawmakers' groups.
Major Policies and Political Positions
In economic policy, she has emphasized active fiscal spending, maintaining a monetary easing stance, and expanding investment in strategic sectors, under what is called Sanaenomics. In security, she maintains a hardline position, advocating increased defense spending, fostering the defense industry, and actively promoting discussions on constitutional revision. In diplomacy, while strengthening the alliance with the United States as a pillar, she has shown a line that emphasizes containing China and expanding substantive cooperation with Taiwan. On social and cultural issues, she has taken conservative positions valuing traditional values and the family system, while also showing a dual aspect of emphasizing both the expansion of women's social participation and measures against low birth rates.
LDP Presidency and Assumption of Premiership
She ran in the September 2024 LDP leadership election and placed first in the first round but was overtaken by Shigeru Ishiba in the runoff. She then rallied support from conservative factions within the party and ran again in the October 2025 leadership election, defeating Shinjiro Koizumi in the runoff and being elected the 29th President of the LDP. After coalition partner Komeito decided to leave the coalition, she formed a new coalition framework with Nippon Ishin no Kai, and was inaugurated as Prime Minister through the prime ministerial designation vote at an extraordinary Diet session. Japan thus entered the era of its first female prime minister.
Recent Developments
Japanese politics in 2024–2025 was a period marked by the aftermath of the LDP's political funding scandal, the dissolution of factions within the party, and instability in government management caused by a crushing defeat in the general election. In this context, Sanae Takaichi rallied support from the party's conservative base and party members to rise to the party presidency; immediately after taking office, she presented responding to rising prices, easing household burdens, and fostering strategic industries such as energy and semiconductors as top priorities. In addition, to stably manage a minority ruling coalition, she announced a policy of making a policy consultation body with Nippon Ishin no Kai permanent and gradually pursuing discussions on constitutional revision and security-related legislation. Externally, she emphasizes maintaining practical cooperation in Korea-Japan relations, strengthening the U.S.-Japan alliance, and expanding security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, while managing tensions with neighboring countries over historical perception issues is cited as a key variable in the future. Because of the symbolism of being Japan's first female prime minister, domestic and international attention is also focused on gender-related policies and the composition of her cabinet.
