SBS Gayo Daejeon
Overview
SBS Gayo Daejeon (SBS 가요대전) is a year-end music festival organized and broadcast by South Korea's SBS every late December. Since its first broadcast in 1992, it has been called one of the country's three major year-end music programs, along with KBS Song Festival and MBC Gayo Daejejeon, and features a large lineup of K-pop artists who represented the year. In its early days it had a strong awards-ceremony character, but after the mid-2000s it abolished award categories and shifted to a performance-centered festival.

History and Changes
SBS Gayo Daejeon first aired after SBS's launch in 1992. From the 1990s through the early 2000s, it operated as a year-end music awards ceremony, presenting awards such as the Grand Prize, Main Prize, and Rookie Award, and artists representing their eras, including H.O.T., Sechs Kies, S.E.S., Fin.K.L, Jo Sung-mo, and Lee Hyori, received honors. With the 2006 edition, the awards categories were concluded, and from 2007 it was reorganized into a year-end special program in a pure performance format. Since then, it has been broadcast around Christmas every year, with a specific theme set each year for the stages.
Format and Characteristics
The broadcast runs for about three hours, and top K-pop groups and solo artists all appear. In addition to stages for the latest hit songs, special collaborations, cover stages, and season-limited unit stages are prepared and draw attention. Special stages suited to the year-end atmosphere and large-scale opening stages are signature highlights of SBS Gayo Daejeon. The MC lineup also becomes a topic every year, and popular idol members often serve as co-hosts.
Broadcast and Influence
SBS Gayo Daejeon is broadcast live nationwide through terrestrial television and is also distributed through online platforms for overseas K-pop fans. Among year-end music programs, it records high topicality with spectacular stage production and lineups reflecting the latest trends. Immediately after the broadcast, videos of major stages spread on YouTube and social media and influence the music charts and fandom responses of the appearing artists. Entering the 2020s, except for the COVID-19 pandemic period, it has generally been operated in a format combining offline performances and broadcasting.
Recent Trends
The 2023 and 2024 SBS Gayo Daejeon were held at Inspire Arena in Incheon during the Christmas season, continuing a format that combines a large concert venue with broadcasting. On the 2024 stage, a lineup spanning generations and retro and future-concept production drew attention, and simultaneous overseas platform streaming and multilingual subtitle services targeting the global K-pop fandom were strengthened. Recently, strategies for spreading stage clips through short-form content have stood out, and new attempts such as eco-friendly stage production and virtual stages using digital technology are continuing. Ahead of the 2025 broadcast, expectations are high for the artist lineup and special collaboration stages, and platform diversification to secure the year-end music festival's global competitiveness is expected to continue.
