Definition and Etymology
'Seonseon' is the root of 'seonseonhada,' meaning a cool feeling brought by a chilly breeze. It is a pure Korean word, similar to 'seoreunhada' (cool/chilly) but conveying a fresher and more pleasant sensation rather than a negative one. According to the Standard Korean Language Dictionary of the National Institute of Korean Language, it means "the degree of warmth feels slightly cold." Historically, the expression 'seonseon' also appears in documents from the Joseon Dynasty, and it is presumed to have been used among the people for a long time.
Meteorological Conditions
Seonseon weather typically occurs when clear, dry air prevails under the influence of migratory anticyclones. Perceived comfort is high when temperatures are around 17–22°C and humidity is around 40–60%. It commonly appears in autumn when the diurnal temperature range widens—warm during the day and seonseon in the mornings and evenings. It is also a meteorological phenomenon that emerges as cold air from the northwest begins to affect the Korean Peninsula. During this period, the sky becomes clear and high, clouds decrease, and visibility increases.
Seasons and Culture
As a weather expression representing autumn, the first seonseon breeze arriving after the end of summer heat brings people a sense of relief and refreshment. In literature, it frequently appears in expressions such as 'seonseonhan baram' (cool wind) and 'seonseonhan gaeul' (cool autumn), and it was used in old sijo and folk songs to convey the mood of autumn. For example, it often appears in poems by Kim Sowol and in Goryeo gayo to express the coolness of the season. In modern times, people sense seasonal change in casual daily conversation with phrases like "The weather has turned seonseon." Additionally, 'a seonseon wind blows' is sometimes interpreted as a sign of new beginnings or good opportunities, showing its use as a cultural metaphor.
Daily Life and Health
Seonseon weather is favorable for outdoor activities, but because of the large diurnal temperature range, health care during the seasonal transition is necessary. Layering clothing is advisable, and one should be cautious of skin and respiratory conditions caused by dryness. In particular, for patients with allergic rhinitis or asthma, the cool, dry air can worsen symptoms and requires attention. In agriculture, this is the time when rice ripens, and the cool temperatures benefit crop maturation. This period is also closely related to natural phenomena such as the onset of autumn foliage and the ripening of grains.
Linguistic Characteristics
'Seonseonhada' is used as an adjective, and 'seonseonhi' as an adverb. Its antonyms include 'mudeopda' (hot and humid) and 'hunhunhada' (warm and cozy). Idiomatically, 'seonseonhan baram' (cool wind) can symbolize a good omen, and expressions like 'seonseonhi neomeogada' have extended meanings of handling matters leniently rather than strictly. Thus, 'seonseon' carries meanings across multiple layers beyond a mere weather expression.
Recent Trends
Due to recent climate change, in 2024 the start of autumn was delayed, and late-summer heat persisted into September. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration's outlook for 2025, temperatures are likely to remain higher than average through October, shortening the period of 'seonseon weather.' As a result, attention is growing regarding changes in seasonal perception and health management for heat-related illnesses and air-conditioning sickness. In addition, due to the urban heat island effect, temperatures may not drop at night, allowing 'tropical nights' to extend into autumn. Conversely, increased climate variability has also led to more cases of sudden cold snaps, and it has been reported that the shortened period of seonseon weather has narrowed people's choices in clothing.
