Smart Glasses
Overview
Smart Glasses are wearable devices that combine computing functions such as displays, cameras, sensors, wireless communication, and processors into the form of ordinary eyeglasses. They provide functions such as augmented reality (AR) technology that overlays information in the user's field of view, voice assistants, photography, and real-time translation, and aim to assist and extend the smartphone rather than replace it. With the recent combination of AI assistants and generative models, they are a representative next-generation computing form factor that is drawing attention again.

Definition and Classification
Smart glasses are largely divided into three types. First, audio-centric types (e.g., Amazon Echo Frames) transmit only sound through bone conduction or speakers. Second, information display types (e.g., Google Glass, Vuzix) display notifications, navigation, and translated subtitles through a HUD (head-up display). Third, fully immersive AR glasses (e.g., Microsoft HoloLens, Magic Leap) implement spatial recognition and 3D holograms.
Key Technology Elements
- Optical module: Ultra-compact projector technologies such as waveguides, Birdbath optics, and micro LED/LCoS determine display size and field of view.
- Sensors and recognition: Cameras, IMUs, depth sensors, and LiDAR recognize the surrounding environment and implement hand gestures and gaze tracking.
- Computing and communication: On-device SoCs and Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 5G, with cloud or smartphone offloading when necessary, compensate for insufficient computing power.
- Battery and weight reduction: A weight level of 40–80 g is key to commercialization, and thermal management and power-efficiency design are core challenges.
Application Areas
In manufacturing and logistics, remote support and work instructions; in healthcare, surgery assistance and telemedicine; in education, practice and simulation; in sports, real-time training data; and for general consumers, translation, navigation, photography, and notifications.
Latest Trends
In 2024–2025, the smart glasses market is being reorganized around AI glasses. Meta's Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses achieved mainstream success by incorporating multimodal AI (voice and image recognition), after which Meta unveiled the Orion AR prototype, suggesting the possibility of true AR glasses. Google has announced an Android XR platform combined with Gemini and a collaboration model with Samsung, and Apple is also reportedly researching a lightweight glasses-type device separate from its Vision line. Key trends are ① integration of multimodal AI assistants, ② lightweight, daily-wearable designs, ③ camera privacy debates and regulatory responses, ④ optical and semiconductor innovation to overcome weight and battery limits, and ⑤ competition to secure a developer ecosystem and killer apps. However, concerns over privacy invasion due to filming and recording, comfort and price issues, and a lack of content remain challenges to be solved.
