Solidigm

Overview

Solidigm is an American subsidiary of SK Hynix, a semiconductor company that specializes in the design and manufacturing of data center and enterprise SSDs (solid state drives). It was created through a 2020 agreement between Intel and SK Hynix to acquire Intel's NAND flash business, and has now established itself as a major player in the high-capacity, high-performance enterprise SSD market worldwide.

Company Founding and History

Solidigm was officially launched in October 2021 when SK Hynix completed the first phase of its acquisition of Intel's NAND flash memory and SSD business. Its headquarters is in San Jose, California, USA, and it inherited Intel's research and development (R&D) personnel and some manufacturing facilities. Initially operated jointly by SK Hynix and Intel, it became a wholly owned subsidiary of SK Hynix in March 2025 after the second phase of the acquisition was completed. The acquisition totaled $9 billion (about KRW 13 trillion), making it a significant M&A case in the history of the semiconductor industry.

Main Products and Technologies

Solidigm mainly produces enterprise data center SSDs. Representative lineups include data center NVMe SSDs such as the 'D5-P5530', 'D7-P5520', and 'D8-P5520', while the high-capacity QLC (quad-level cell) product 'D5-P5336' supports ultra-large capacities of over 60TB, making it suitable for workloads such as data storage for AI (artificial intelligence) training. In particular, Solidigm is also focusing on developing PLC (penta-level cell) technology, continuing its innovation to raise the capacity limits of individual SSDs. In addition, it emphasizes excellent compatibility with open-source software ecosystems, helping customers flexibly build their data infrastructure.

Market Position and Competitive Structure

Solidigm's main competitors are global NAND flash and SSD companies such as Samsung Electronics, Micron, Kioxia, and WD (Western Digital). In the NAND flash market itself, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix (including Solidigm) occupy the top ranks. Solidigm in particular offers differentiated enterprise products based on the SSD controller technology and firmware development capabilities that Intel possessed. According to market research firm TrendForce, as of 2024 Solidigm recorded a market share of more than 10% in the global data center SSD market, ranking within the top five. Its presence in the enterprise storage market is therefore unmistakable.

Company Culture and Values

Solidigm carries on Intel's engineering culture and innovative approach, focusing not only on developing high-performance products but also on providing customer-tailored solutions. In particular, it pursues a 'workload optimization' strategy for close cooperation with data center customers, designing SSDs that deliver optimal performance in diverse environments such as AI, machine learning (ML), big data analytics, and cloud computing. It is also attentive to environmentally responsible management by improving power efficiency and reducing waste in consideration of sustainability.

Latest Trends

From 2024 through 2025, Solidigm has been expanding its lineup of high-capacity QLC SSDs in response to growing storage demand for AI data centers. In particular, as next-generation products supporting the PCIe 5.0 interface enter full-scale mass production, enterprises can secure faster NVMe performance along with power efficiency. In March 2025, SK Hynix completed the second phase of its acquisition of Solidigm, making it a wholly owned subsidiary, and through this the Solidigm brand is expected to expand its market presence more aggressively by leveraging SK Hynix's global marketing and distribution network. Solidigm is also striving to meet the demands of hyperscalers (large cloud companies) by supporting various form factors such as E1.S and E3.S. Industry experts predict that as massive amounts of data are generated in the process of training and inferencing AI models, the importance of enterprise SSDs with high sequential read/write speeds and excellent power efficiency will only grow. In this context, Solidigm's high-capacity QLC technology and stable firmware technology inherited from Intel stand as core strengths that keep it competitive against rivals.
