Walk-off

A term in baseball and other sports referring to a come-from-behind play that decides the game at the very moment it ends.

Walk-off

Overview

A walk-off (Korean: 끝내기, kkeutnaegi) refers to a play in baseball and other sports in which a team scores at the last at-bat or final moment, ending the game immediately and securing victory. The most representative forms are the 'walk-off hit' and 'walk-off home run' in baseball, and because the outcome is decided at the same instant the game ends, they deliver dramatic catharsis to the spectators. In English-speaking countries, this is called a 'walk-off.'

Definition and Etymology

'끝내기' is a native Korean expression, derived from the sense of a decisive blow that 'ends' (끝내다) the game. The English term 'walk-off' comes from the fact that the moment a victorious player steps on home plate, the opposing team must leave (walk off) the field. In Major League Baseball (MLB), it is widely told that Dennis Eckersley officially established the term in 1988.

Walk-offs in Baseball

Under baseball rules, if the home team succeeds in coming from behind during its at-bat in the bottom of the ninth inning (including extra innings), the game ends immediately at that point. Therefore, in a walk-off situation, the game stops the moment the winning run scores, regardless of the run difference. Because of this, even when a walk-off hit occurs, if two or more runners cross home plate, only a smaller number of runs than the actual total may be credited in the official record.

Types of Walk-offs

  • Walk-off hit: The most common form, scoring the winning run with an RBI hit
  • Walk-off home run: The most dramatic form, such as a come-from-behind grand slam
  • Walk-off sacrifice fly / sacrifice bunt: A runner on third scores on an outfield fly
  • Walk-off walk / hit-by-pitch / wild pitch / balk: Cases where the outcome turns on a pitcher's error-like play
  • Walk-off double play: The worst-case scenario from the batting team's perspective

Walk-offs in Other Sports

Beyond baseball, the expression 'walk-off' is borrowed for games in volleyball, basketball, ice hockey, and others in which the winning score comes right before the end. In particular, the final rally point in volleyball and the buzzer beater in basketball are used as concepts similar to a walk-off.

Notable Records and Cases

In the KBO League, Park Kyung-wan (박경완), Lee Seung-yuop (이승엽), and Choi Jeong (최정), among others, recorded numerous walk-off hits, and even players with double-digit career walk-off home runs are rare. In Major League Baseball, Bobby Thomson's 1951 'Shot Heard 'Round the World' is regarded as a historic walk-off home run, and Kirk Gibson's walk-off home run in the 1988 World Series and Joe Carter's walk-off home run in 1993 remain famous moments.

Recent Trends

Entering 2024–2025, as the KBO League's game patterns shifted due to rule changes such as the Automated Ball-Strike System (ABS) and the enlargement of base sizes, changes also appeared in the patterns of walk-off situations. In particular, the 2024 season saw a flood of the most walk-off decisions in a regular season, drawing attention as a box-office element, and each club is increasingly refining its 'walk-off prevention shift' and bullpen management strategies when defending in the bottom of the ninth. In Major League Baseball, the frequency of walk-off home runs and stolen base attempts is on the rise together, owing to the pitch clock introduced in 2023 and the expanded automatic intentional walks and defensive shift restrictions since 2024. In addition, as data analysis has advanced, sabermetric indicators such as 'Win Probability Added' for walk-offs are displayed in real time on broadcast screens, establishing themselves as an element that heightens fan immersion. On streaming and short-form platforms, highlight clips of dramatic walk-off moments are consumed as viral content, and clubs are actively planning merchandise and events themed around 'walk-off victories' in their marketing as well.
