Weverse

Overview

Weverse is a global fandom community platform operated by Weverse Company, a subsidiary of HYBE. It was launched in June 2019 by beNX, a subsidiary of Big Hit Entertainment (now HYBE), and offers community features for direct interaction between artists and fans, live streaming, commerce (goods and albums), and memberships all within a single app. Starting with a focus on K-pop artists, it expanded its scope of participation to global artists, establishing itself as a representative platform in the fandom business.

Key Details

Background and History

Service began in June 2019 with BTS, and in the same year, Big Hit's subsidiary beNX took charge of operations. In 2020, it absorbed the Weverse Shop business, combining community and commerce, and in 2021, Naver made a large-scale equity investment in beNX, which set in motion full-scale integration work with Naver's V LIVE. beNX changed its name to Weverse Company, and when the V LIVE service ended on December 31, 2022, V LIVE's live and fan communication features were migrated and integrated into Weverse. Since then, it has also pursued regional localization strategies, including operating Weverse Japan, a dedicated Japanese service, separately.

Core Features

Fan Community: This is a structure in which artists directly post posts, photos, and videos, and fans respond with comments and likes. Independent spaces are operated for each artist, providing announcements, schedules, and membership-exclusive posts.

Weverse Live: This is a real-time streaming feature through which online concerts, fan meetings, comeback showcases, and more take place. It supports multilingual real-time subtitles and replay features, lowering language barriers.

Weverse Shop and Membership: It combines a commerce area that sells albums, concert tickets, and official goods with a paid membership (fanship). Membership subscribers receive benefits such as advance ticket purchasing, exclusive content, and digital badges.

Weverse DM: This is a paid subscription service that provides an experience as if artists are sending personal messages to fans, and discussions have been underway to link and integrate it with DearU's message service.

Translation and Accessibility: AI-based automatic translation is applied to posts and comments, designed so that users of multiple languages such as Korean, English, Japanese, and Chinese can communicate simultaneously. This is regarded as a key technological foundation for the expansion of the global fandom.

Participating Artists and Expansion

Starting with HYBE label artists such as BTS, SEVENTEEN, TOMORROW X TOGETHER, ENHYPEN, LE SSERAFIM, and NewJeans, the platform broadened its reach by onboarding artists from other agencies such as YG, JYP, and SM, as well as overseas artists. A notable characteristic is that it aims for an open structure in which multiple labels participate, rather than being a platform exclusive to a specific agency.

Business Model

Weverse's revenue structure largely consists of (1) commerce (sales of albums, goods, and tickets), (2) paid memberships, (3) subscription-type services such as DM, and (4) advertising and content partnerships. The core strategy is to secure stable recurring revenue based on the fandom's high willingness to pay and lock-in effects. The offline event 'Weverse Con Festival' is a representative example of expansion connecting the online platform with offline performances, and it has established itself as a festival in which domestic and international artists participate.

Latest Trends

In 2024–2025, Weverse is showing a trend of evolving beyond a simple fan community into a 'fandom super app.' Along with a redesign of the app's UI/UX, live commerce, digital membership cards, and diversification of membership products by artist have progressed, and global user convenience has been strengthened through advanced AI translation and subtitle quality and the introduction of recommendation algorithms. In addition, using live data accumulated since the V LIVE integration, it is expanding online-offline linked performances and fan events, and strengthening region-tailored marketing in Japan, North America, and Southeast Asia. As fandom culture that values direct communication with artists spreads, building an integrated ecosystem encompassing community, commerce, and performances is cited as a key future task in order to differentiate itself from competing platforms (Bubble, FANS, etc.). However, discussions are also being raised about deepening platform dependence, fee structures, and the use of personal information and fan data.
