Key Details
Establishment and History
Woori Card's roots trace back to Woori Bank's credit card business division. It had operated a bank-affiliated card business since the late 1980s, and in April 2013, it was spun off from Woori Bank and established as a separate corporation for the purpose of reorganizing the financial holding company system and strengthening the competitiveness of the card business. It was subsequently incorporated as an affiliate under Woori Financial Group and has expanded its business based on synergies with group companies such as banking, securities, and insurance.
Main Businesses and Products
- Credit cards: It operates the “Card's Standard” (카드의정석) series as its flagship brand, with a lineup tailored to different spending patterns, such as everyday discounts, point accumulation, and travel specialization.
- Debit cards and postpaid transportation cards: It offers products combining debit-type payment methods with transportation and telecommunications payment functions.
- Payments and ancillary services: It operates credit functions such as domestic and international payment network connections, installment financing, revolving credit, and card loans, as well as various partnership and membership services.
- Affinity cards: It is broadening customer touchpoints through specialized cards partnered with various industries, including retail, aviation, telecommunications, and fuel.
Governance and Management
It has a subsidiary structure in which Woori Financial Group holds shares, and it plays an important role in the group's strategy to strengthen its non-banking sector. It has a management system centered on a CEO, and its organization is divided into product, sales, risk, and digital divisions. Its major competitors include Shinhan Card, Samsung Card, Hyundai Card, KB Kookmin Card, Hana Card, and Lotte Card.
Position in the Industry
The domestic card industry is divided into large companies such as Shinhan, Samsung, Hyundai, and KB Kookmin, and small and medium-sized companies, and Woori Card belongs to the upper-mid-tier group in terms of number of members and asset size. As a bank-affiliated card company, its strengths include bank-linked products, group integrated membership, and asset management-linked services. However, securing brand loyalty is pointed to as a challenge due to the card industry's low entry barriers and fierce promotional competition.
Regulatory Environment
Card companies are subject to the Specialized Credit Finance Business Act and are supervised by the Financial Services Commission and the Financial Supervisory Service. Regulations concerning merchant fee rates, member recruitment methods, advertising and marketing, and personal information protection directly affect business operations. Recently, institutional changes such as MyData, relaxed network separation, and partnerships with big tech are acting as new variables in card companies' business models.
Recent Trends
In 2024–2025, the card industry is simultaneously facing two challenges: digital transformation and worsening profitability.
- Digital and app competition: Woori Card is upgrading card issuance, payment, and benefit inquiry functions through its mobile app, and expanding simple payment, biometric authentication, and MyData-linked services.
- Data and AI utilization: The trend of introducing artificial intelligence for personalized benefit recommendations using spending data and advanced fraud detection (FDS) continues.
- Profitability pressure: As it becomes difficult for card companies overall to improve profits due to cuts in merchant fee rates, interest rate fluctuations, and slowing loan growth, revenue diversification through overseas payments, premium products, and new business development has emerged as a major task.
- Group synergies: Under Woori Financial Group's policy of strengthening non-banking operations, integrated financial services linked with securities, insurance, and asset management are expanding.
- Soundness management: In response to rising delinquency rates and credit losses, it is strengthening its risk management system and pursuing preemptive management through analysis of individual members' limits and payment patterns.
