World Series

The annual final championship series between the American League and National League champions of Major League Baseball (MLB), determining the champion of U.S. professional baseball.

World Series

Overview

The World Series is the annual final championship series in which the American League (AL) champion and the National League (NL) champion of Major League Baseball (MLB) face each other. It is held from late October to early November each year and uses a best-of-seven format to determine the strongest MLB team of that year. Only two teams that have passed through the 162-game regular season and the postseason wild card, Division Series, and Championship Series can participate, and it is regarded as the most prestigious championship title in North American professional sports.

Key Information

History and Origins

The origins of the World Series can be found in late 19th-century interleague contests between the American League and National League, such as the Temple Cup. The first World Series in the modern sense was the 1903 matchup between the Boston Americans (now the Boston Red Sox) and the Pittsburgh Pirates, which Boston won 5 games to 3. In 1904, New York Giants manager John McGraw refused to participate, so the series was not held; afterward, the system was reorganized and the event became regularized.

Major historical events include the Black Sox Scandal, in which Chicago White Sox players participated in match-fixing in 1919; Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series and Sandy Koufax's perfect game in 1965; and the cancellation of the entire postseason due to a players' union strike in 1994. The 2001 series between the Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Yankees, held just after the September 11 attacks, resonated widely throughout American society.

Game Format

  • Best-of-seven format: The first team to win four games is champion.
  • Home-field advantage: From 2003, the league that won the All-Star Game was given home-field advantage, but from 2017 it changed to a system in which the team with the better regular-season record receives home-field advantage.
  • Game scheduling: Based on the home-field advantage team, the series is played in a 2-3-2 format (Games 1, 2, 6, and 7 at home; Games 3, 4, and 5 away) to reduce travel burden.
  • Designated hitter rule: From 2022, the designated hitter system was fully applied in both leagues, unifying operating rules.

Key Records and Awards

The club with the most championships is the New York Yankees (27), followed by the St. Louis Cardinals (11), Oakland Athletics (9), Boston Red Sox (9), San Francisco Giants (8), and Los Angeles Dodgers (8). The World Series MVP was established in 1955 and is awarded to the player who performs best in the series, separate from the regular season. Representative winners include Johnny Bench, Reggie Jackson ('Mr. October'), Derek Jeter, and Madison Bumgarner.

Koreans and the World Series

Kim Byung-hyun, as a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001, earned a championship ring and became the first Korean pitcher to win the World Series. In 2018, Ryu Hyun-jin started a game in the series for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and in 2020, Choi Ji-man appeared on the World Series stage as the Tampa Bay Rays' starting first baseman. In 2024, the Los Angeles Dodgers' championship renewed Korean fans' interest, and along with the performances of Korean major leaguers such as Kim Ha-seong and Lee Jung-hoo, domestic demand for broadcasts is steadily increasing.

2023-2025 Season Results

In 2023, the Texas Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 4 games to 1 to win their first title, and Corey Seager was named MVP. In 2024, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees 4 games to 1 to win the championship, and Freddie Freeman won MVP with a standout performance that included a walk-off grand slam in Game 1. Changes in Rules and Trends

Rule revisions introduced in 2023, including the pitch clock (a time limit between pitches), restrictions on defensive shifts, and larger bases, sped up the pace of play and activated stolen bases and baserunning. The phased introduction of automated ball-strike (ABS) calls and discussions of robot umpires are also underway. In addition, star marketing led by Shohei Ohtani, development of Asian and Latin American markets such as the Tokyo opening games, and expanded uniform and broadcast rights contracts are combining to grow the World Series' global viewership to record levels. The dispersal of broadcast rights to streaming platforms and the increasing value-added nature of ticket and merchandise revenue are also clear recent trends.
