Zeta
Overview
Zeta (Ζ/ζ) is the sixth letter of the Greek alphabet, written as uppercase Ζ and lowercase ζ. In Ancient Greek it was a plosive close to 'zd', but in Modern Greek it is pronounced 'z'. Today its use as a symbol is far more important than the letter itself, having become a standard symbol in diverse fields such as the Riemann zeta function in mathematics, damping and impedance coefficients in physics, and coordinate axes and signal representation in engineering. Furthermore, the name 'Zeta' has expanded throughout popular culture, extending to games, animation, and corporate brands.
Main content
Zeta as a letter
Zeta originated from the Phoenician letter Zayin, and in the Greek alphabet order it comes after Ε (epsilon) and before Η (eta). The Romans adopted this letter and made it the origin of the Latin letter Z, and the Cyrillic letter З also belongs to the same lineage. Pronunciation differed according to Ancient Greek dialect; the general scholarly consensus is that in the Attic dialect it was realized as /zd/ or /dz/, while in the Ionic dialect it was /z/. In Modern Greek it has settled completely into the fricative /z/.
Zeta in mathematics
In mathematics, zeta overwhelmingly refers to the 'Riemann zeta function'. This function is defined by the infinite series ζ(s) = Σ 1/n^s, and converges for complex numbers s whose real part is greater than 1. Leonhard Euler discovered its connection to prime numbers in the 18th century, and Bernhard Riemann, in an 1859 paper, extended its domain to the entire complex plane through analytic continuation, making it a central object of modern number theory. The so-called 'Riemann hypothesis' is the claim that all nontrivial zeros of this function lie on the line with real part 1/2; it is one of the Millennium Problems and the greatest unsolved problem in modern mathematics. In addition, special values such as ζ(2) = π²/6 and ζ(4) = π⁴/90 are called the Basel problem and are regarded as representative results linking analysis and number theory.
Zeta in science and engineering
In fluid mechanics, the damping ratio is denoted by ζ, and it is used as a key dimensionless quantity determining the vibration characteristics of an oscillatory system. In electrical engineering, there is a widespread convention of representing the imaginary/reactive component of impedance by ζ, and in control engineering the damping coefficient by ζ. In chemistry, the zeta potential is used as an indicator of the charge state on the surface of colloidal particles, and is decisive in predicting dispersion stability. In space science it also appears as the spectral index of cosmic rays, and in atmospheric science as a stability index.
Coordinates and unit prefix
The convention of placing the third axis as z after the x and y axes in three-dimensional space originated in the Cartesian coordinate system, and the ζ (zeta) derived from this became fixed as a symbol implying 'depth' or 'the third variable'. Meanwhile, among SI prefixes, 'zetta (Z)', meaning 10²¹, and 'zepto (z)', meaning 10⁻²¹, were introduced in 1991, so zeta is also used in physical and information units dealing with extreme scales. However, uppercase Z has the same form as the Greek letter zeta, which can cause confusion.
Popular culture and brands
In the Japanese anime Mobile Suit Gundam series, 'Zeta (Ζ)' appears, inheriting the lineage of the Principality of Zeon, and this is a representative example of using the image of the Greek letter. In games, webtoons, and novels, 'Zeta' is also frequently used as a proper noun symbolizing the final stage or an unknown realm. It has also been used as a company name in many cases, and has been utilized in brand naming in the automobile, electronics, and software fields.
Recent trends
As of 2024–2025, the point where the name Zeta is most actively discussed is, again, the intersection of mathematics and AI. Numerical verification of the Riemann hypothesis continues to update the number of zeros through supercomputers and distributed computing, and research attempting to use machine learning to explore patterns in the distribution of zeros of the zeta function has appeared in several preprint repositories. In 2024, Harper's result on large values of the zeta function became a topic, bringing renewed attention to analytic number theory research.
In engineering, zeta potential measurement in electric vehicle batteries and semiconductor processes has re-emerged as a key indicator for controlling nanoparticle dispersion, and after the 2022 expansion of SI prefixes (ronna, quetta, etc.), the 'zetta' unit on the 10²¹ scale is frequently mentioned in discussions of data center capacity and astronomical observation units. In popular culture, following the remake/sequel boom since 2024, works and models related to Gundam Zeta have again shown strong sales, and search volume has also remained steady.
