Overview
The 18th is the eighteenth day of a month in the Gregorian calendar (solar calendar). It is a date that exists in every month from January to December, coming after the 17th and before the 19th of each month. The 18th of a given month has been the stage for various historical events, anniversaries, and international commemorative days, and it often carries symbolic meaning, especially in the political, social, and cultural fields.

In Korean history, the April 18, 1960 demonstration by Korea University students, which became the fuse for the April 19 Revolution, and the outbreak of the Gwangju Democratization Movement on May 18, 1980, hold important significance.
International commemorative days and social significance
Various international organizations and groups have designated the 18th of a particular month as a commemorative day. The United Nations designated December 18 as International Migrants Day, and June 18 is observed as Sustainable Gastronomy Day. In addition, there are not a few cases in which national commemorative days, such as independence days and constitution days of various countries, are concentrated on the 18th.
Cultural and social customs
The age of 18 is the age that serves as the standard for legal adulthood in several countries, including South Korea, and people whose birthdays fall on the 18th are sometimes given symbolic meaning in certain cultures. In addition, in some cultures the number 18 is read as the combination of "10 and 8" and considered an auspicious number, while conversely in certain regions it is interpreted as an unlucky number.

Sports match schedules, major companies' earnings announcements, policy decisions, and the like tend to be concentrated on the 18th of a particular month. In particular, around the 18th of March, June, September, and December, when quarterly settlements are made, a pattern of increased volatility in financial markets is sometimes observed.

As of 2024–2025, the 18th is being reexamined in digital calendar and social media environments in combination with "anniversary reminder" functions. There is a growing number of cases in which it is used as a day for rallying civil society movements, such as the International Youth Climate Action Day for responding to the climate crisis being organized around the 18th of a particular month each year. In addition, with the development of generative AI and data analysis technology, historical date data is automatically collected and classified, and "This Day in History" content that shows events that occurred on a specific date at a glance has become popular. In 2025, as the practice spreads of governments announcing digital public service reform plans on the 18th of a particular month, the 18th is also trending toward becoming a practical standard date in administrative and policy schedules.
