2승 (Squaring)
Overview
2승 (二乘, "second power") is a polysemous term that refers to different concepts depending on context. In mathematics it denotes the power obtained by multiplying a number by itself twice — that is, the square — written as a². In sports and games it is used as a unit for counting a second victory or two consecutive wins, and in Buddhism it can mean the Two Vehicles (二乘), the two sets of teachings suited to practitioners' capacities. This article summarizes how "2승" is defined and used in each field.

Squaring in mathematics
In the power aⁿ, when the exponent n is 2 — that is, a² = a × a — it is called 2승 or 제곱 (square). For example, 3 squared is 9, 5 squared is 25, and 10 squared is 100. In spoken Korean one says "2의 2승은 4" ("2 to the second power is 4"), but mathematics textbooks more standardly use the expression "2의 제곱" ("the square of 2").
Its main properties are as follows.
- Sign: Over the real numbers,
a² ≥ 0, anda² = 0only whena = 0. The square of a negative number is also positive. - Inverse operation: The inverse operation of squaring is the square root (√). However, since the square root of a negative number does not exist among the real numbers, the imaginary unit
iis introduced. - Perfect squares: Numbers expressible as the square of an integer are called perfect squares; 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, … are examples.
- Laws of exponents: The laws of exponents apply as they are:
a² × a³ = a⁵,(a²)³ = a⁶,a² ÷ a⁵ = a⁻³, and so on. - Multiplication formulas:
(a+b)² = a² + 2ab + b²and(a−b)² = a² − 2ab + b²are basic tools for factorization and for solving equations.
Geometrically, squaring is directly tied to area. A square with side length a has area a², which is why English uses "square" as the name for this power. The Pythagorean theorem a² + b² = c² shows that the concept of squaring has been used in surveying and architecture since antiquity. Babylonian clay tablets already contain calculation tables dealing with squares and square roots, and the modern notation took hold through Diophantus's Arithmetica and Descartes's exponential notation.
Its range of applications is broad as well. In statistics, variance is defined as the sum of squared deviations, and its square root gives the standard deviation; the method of least squares in regression analysis likewise rests on minimizing the square of errors. In physics, numerous laws contain squared terms, such as kinetic energy ½mv², Einstein's mass–energy equivalence E = mc², gravitational potential energy, and resistive power loss I²R. In computer science, it appears in the O(n²) complexity of sorting algorithms and in the Euclidean norm used for distance calculations.
Winning twice in sports and games
When match results are tallied, wins are counted as a unit, and 2승 means a second win or a cumulative total of two wins. It is especially important in multi-game (series) matches.
- Best-of-three (first to 2 wins): The side that wins two games first is victorious; this is widely used in baseball postseason wild-card games, volleyball and table tennis team events, and combat-sport title bouts.
- Best-of-five (first to 3) and best-of-seven (first to 4): In a multi-game series, "2 wins" indicates an early lead; 2–0 is read as an overwhelming advantage, while 2–1 means the opponent has been allowed to catch up.
- Esports: In League of Legends, StarCraft, and others, set scores such as "2:0" and "2:1" are standard notation, and managing win counts in winners'/losers'-bracket tournaments becomes a core strategy.
- League standings: In regular leagues such as professional baseball, football, and basketball, rankings are determined by wins, losses, and winning percentage, so an early-season "2 wins" is a small sample and rankings fluctuate greatly.
- Go and Korean chess (janggi): In multi-board or team matches, individual win counts are summed to decide team victory, and an individual record such as 2 wins and 1 loss can tip the outcome.
The Two Vehicles (二乘) in Buddhism
In Buddhism, 二乘 (i-seung, "Two Vehicles") refers to the two sets of teachings that lead sentient beings to enlightenment: the Śrāvaka Vehicle (聲聞乘) and the Pratyekabuddha Vehicle (緣覺乘). A śrāvaka is a practitioner who hears the Buddha's teaching and awakens, while a pratyekabuddha is a practitioner who awakens on his own by observing the twelve links of dependent origination. These two are distinguished from the Bodhisattva Vehicle in that they emphasize one's own liberation, and together they are sometimes called the Lesser Vehicle (小乘, Hīnayāna). The Lotus Sūtra's idea of "reconciling the three to return to the one" (會三歸一) is a teaching that goes beyond the three vehicles as skillful means and culminates in the One Vehicle (一乘); the concept of the Two Vehicles thus serves as a starting point for understanding Mahāyāna Buddhist doctrine.
Recent trends
As of 2024–2025, the expression "2승" is drawing renewed attention in several areas.
First, the datafication of esports and multi-game sports has accelerated. Set scores, per-player win counts, and the probability of a comeback after taking a 2-win lead are provided through real-time probability models, and fans consume rare records such as "a comeback after being down 0–2" as statistics. Both domestic professional baseball and volleyball leagues and international esports competitions actively use win-count-based metrics in broadcast graphics.
Second, there is the spread of AI-based mathematics education. As generative AI creates problems on exponents and squares tailored to individual students' levels and explains solution processes step by step, the issue of mixing the terms "2승" and "제곱" is also being addressed in instructional design. Research institutes including the Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation have discussed ways to teach the colloquial expression "2승" and the standard term "제곱" side by side.
Third, the importance of squaring operations is being reexamined in quantum computing and cryptography. Shor's algorithm relies on repeated modular squaring, and for lattice-based cryptography the computational cost of high-dimensional norms (the square root of a sum of squares) determines performance. Accordingly, research on hardware acceleration for fast squaring operations is active.
Fourth, there is an increase in sports-record content. As highlights, record comparisons, and predictive content using "2승" as a keyword grow on YouTube and social media, win-count notation has become more familiar to the general public.
