25th Division
Overview
25th Division is a designation for infantry divisions used respectively by the Republic of Korea Army and the United States Army. In Korea, it often refers both to the Republic of Korea Army's 25th Infantry Division, which was established during the Korean War and committed to major fronts, and to the United States 25th Infantry Division, which fought in the same war. Both units are important cases for understanding the security order in East Asia in the early Cold War and the course of the Korean War.

Republic of Korea Army 25th Infantry Division
The Republic of Korea Army's 25th Infantry Division is one of the infantry divisions organized during the rapid troop expansion around the Korean War. Immediately after its establishment, it participated in the Battle of the Nakdong River Defense Line, the northward advance operations, and later operations to maintain the front line, accumulating combat experience. After the war ended with the armistice agreement, it repeatedly was disbanded and re-established during troop reductions and unit reorganization, and was later incorporated into the regional defense division system responsible for homeland defense and reserve force management. However, descriptions of the timing of its establishment and disbandment differ slightly among sources, so it is advisable to verify sources when citing its history.
Unit Organization and Missions
A division-level unit is normally organized around about three infantry regiments (or brigades), with supporting units such as an artillery brigade and armored, engineer, signal, intelligence, medical, and transportation units. Its peacetime missions include defense of the assigned area, organization and management of reserve forces and mobilization training, counter-infiltration and counter-terrorism operations, and disaster and calamity support. In wartime, the basic concept is to incorporate reserve forces through the mobilization system and convert into a combat unit.
United States 25th Infantry Division
The United States 25th Infantry Division was established in Hawaii in 1941 and is nicknamed "Tropic Lightning." During World War II it was active on the Pacific front, including the Guadalcanal and Luzon campaigns, and when the Korean War broke out, it was deployed to the Korean Peninsula in the summer of 1950 and participated in major battles including the Battle of the Nakdong River Defense Line. It remained stationed on the Korean Peninsula for some time after the war, and later established itself as a core standing force in the Pacific region with its headquarters at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. Currently, it carries out rapid response and multinational combined training missions centered on several brigade-level combat teams.
Symbols and Traditions
Division-level units form their identity through distinctive unit insignia, mottos, mascots, and military songs. These symbols are used in recruit training, strengthening unit cohesion, and commemorative events for veterans, and are managed as part of unit history along with wartime combat records.
Recent Trends
As of 2024–2025, both the South Korean and U.S. militaries are undergoing clear changes in the structure and operation of division-level units. In response to the reduction of personnel resources caused by population decline, the South Korean military is reducing its standing-force-oriented organization and pursuing mechanized and scientific reform centered on brigade-level combat teams. The typical trend is to expand the deployment of surveillance and reconnaissance assets, unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), scientific boundary systems, and automated command-and-control systems to division and brigade levels, and elite reserve forces and improvement of the mobilization system are also being discussed. The United States 25th Infantry Division is expanding its participation in combined training in the Indo-Pacific region and is concurrently conducting training in diverse environments such as tropical and mountainous areas and experiments with drone and counter-drone forces. In addition, as the proportion of division-level command post exercises in ROK-U.S. combined training and multinational training grows, there is a trend emphasizing the ability to operate networked small combat teams rather than large-scale units.
