3on3 Freestyle
Overview
3on3 Freestyle (3on3 프리스타일) is a 3-on-3 street basketball competitive game developed and serviced by the Korean game developer Joycity (조이시티). As a true successor to the online basketball game Freestyle, which gained great popularity in Korea in the 2000s, it was serviced across multiple platforms, including consoles (PlayStation 4), PC, and mobile. It advocates casual sports action that combines flashy individual skills and team play, and adopts a free-to-play model.

Development and Release
3on3 Freestyle is a 3D basketball game developed in-house by Joycity, and was released on the PlayStation 4 platform starting with North America and Europe in 2016. Afterwards, it expanded its service scope to Asia and a Steam PC version, and also introduced a mobile version. Whereas the original Freestyle was based on graphics close to 2D and an online PC environment, this game features 3D graphics based on the Unreal Engine family and an interface optimized for console controls.
Gameplay
The basic rules are 3-on-3 street basketball, and each team consists of 3 characters. Positions are broadly divided into Guard (G), Forward (F), and Center (C), and specialized stats such as 3-point shooting, driving, rebounding, blocking, and passing differ by position. A game is won by the team that scores more points within the time limit, and a successful shot awards 2 or 3 points. Flashy play utilizing fast breaks and individual skills (dribbling, fakes, dunks) is a core element of the fun.
Characters and Progression
At the center of the game are characters with diverse personalities. Each character has a unique appearance, position, and skill, and players can grow characters to strengthen their stats. It provides progression elements through card, equipment, and skill enhancement systems, and there is also a strategic element of aiming for team synergy by combining specific characters. This inherits and develops the original Freestyle's 'player development' system.
Competition and Community
It encourages competition among players through ranked matches (competitive mode), regular matches, and seasonal content. Each season adds new characters, skins, and events, and team-play content at the guild/clan level is also operated. Another feature is that users across regions are matched together through global servers.
Relationship with the Original
Freestyle is an online basketball game that was serviced in Korea around 2004 and caused a great social sensation. 3on3 Freestyle has the character of a sequel aimed at advancing this brand into overseas and console markets, and inherits the worldview and gameplay of the Freestyle IP. However, it differs in that it localized controls, graphics, and the monetization structure for console and global users.
Recent Trends
As of 2024–2025, 3on3 Freestyle continues seasonal updates and regularly carries out new characters and balance patches. Cross-platform play and account linking are being emphasized, and it is striving to retain users through esports tournaments and community events. Discussions among users about the payment burden of the free-to-play model, collaboration content for attracting new users, and attempts at media mix using the original Freestyle IP are continuing. In addition, the differentiation strategy emphasizing casual and arcade qualities in the basketball simulation genre is still evaluated as effective.
