Ahn Jin-su
Overview
Ahn Jin-su (安振洙, born 1960) is a South Korean education activist and civil society activist. He has long worked on issues of resolving educational inequality and strengthening public education, and is particularly regarded as a leading figure in local community-based education community movements.

Early life and education
Ahn Jin-su was born in 1960 in Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and loved reading from an early age. He entered the Department of Education at Seoul National University's College of Education and majored in education. During his university years, he participated in educational volunteer work in poor neighborhoods, deepening his interest in educational issues. After graduation, he briefly worked as a middle school teacher, but feeling the limitations of institutional education, he left teaching and devoted himself to research.
Start of social activism
In the late 1980s, Ahn Jin-su joined civic organizations and began his full-fledged career as a social activist. He planned and operated a 'visiting study room' (찾아가는 공부방) program to improve educational conditions in rural areas, which later became a model case that spread nationwide. In the 1990s, he participated in establishing education welfare policies, serving as a bridge between the government and civil society.
Activities to resolve educational inequality
Ahn's greatest achievement is the 'Connecting Schools and Villages' movement, which he began in the early 2000s. Criticizing the reality that schools were isolated from local communities and oriented toward competition, he carried out experiments to integrate village libraries, youth communities, and parent networks into school curricula. This approach is cited as a pioneering example of the concept of a 'village education community' (마을교육공동체), which many education experts now pay attention to. He also directly established and operated scholarship projects and mentoring programs for children from low-income families, making a substantive contribution to reducing educational gaps.
Writings and lectures
Ahn Jin-su published several books systematizing his experiences and theories. Representative works include Education, Finding a Path in the Village (《교육, 마을에서 길을 찾다》, 2012) and Public Education Is Hope (《공교육이 희망이다》, 2016), which were widely read not only in education circles but also by general readers. He has continued to give lectures across the country, advocating the importance of the education community movement.
Recent developments
As of 2024, Ahn Jin-su is seeking directions for the education community movement in the era of digital transformation. He points out that with the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) technology into education, gaps in digital access among marginalized groups could lead to new educational inequality. Recently, he launched a 'Citizens' Committee for Bridging the Digital Education Divide' and is leading related policy proposals and community experiments. In 2025, he is serving as an advisory member of the Ministry of Education, offering opinions on school models in the AI era.
