Overview
Ahn Jung-hwan (안정환, born January 27, 1976) is a former South Korean football player who played as a forward during his active career. He was one of the main figures who led the South Korean national team's semi-final miracle at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, particularly scoring a golden goal in the round of 16 match against Italy, rising to national hero status. With his flashy personality and unique goal celebrations, he earned the nickname 'Royal Fighter,' and is considered one of the most successful South Korean players to have played in overseas leagues.
Club Career
Ahn Jung-hwan debuted in 1998 with Busan Daewoo Royals (now Busan IPark) in the K-League. He moved to Shimizu S-Pulse in the Japanese J.League in 1999, playing for two seasons, before advancing to European football in 2000 with Perugia Calcio in Italy's Serie A. He then played for Kashima Antlers in Japan from 2002 to 2005, and moved to MSV Duisburg in the German Bundesliga in 2005. In 2006, he played for FC Metz in France's Ligue 1, and after a stint with SC Freiburg in Germany in 2007, he returned to domestic football by joining Suwon Samsung Bluewings in the K-League in 2008. He played for Dalian Shide in the Chinese Super League in 2009, returned to Kashima Antlers in the Japanese J.League in 2010, and announced his retirement in 2011.
National Team Career
Ahn Jung-hwan debuted on the international stage with the South Korea U-20 team in 1997 and was officially selected for the senior national team from 1999. At the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup, he scored an equalizer and a golden goal in the round of 16 match against Italy, making a decisive contribution to the team's advancement to the quarterfinals. He also successfully converted a penalty kick in the shootout against Spain in the quarterfinals. He later participated in the 2006 World Cup in Germany and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, appearing in a total of three World Cups. He recorded 71 caps and 17 goals for the national team.

Ahn Jung-hwan's main weapons were his strong heading ability and accurate shooting, based on his 188cm height and solid physique. He excelled particularly in aerial duels and had a knack for scoring in crucial moments, with outstanding positioning inside the penalty box. However, he was sometimes evaluated as relying more on individual skill than team play.

After retirement, Ahn Jung-hwan has been active as a football commentator and broadcaster. He works as a football commentator for SBS ESPN and SBS Sports, receiving praise for his sharp analysis and sense of humor. He also gained public popularity by appearing on entertainment programs such as "Dad! Where Are We Going?" and "1 Night 2 Days," and continues to work as a model for various advertisements and give football-related lectures.
Personal Life and Other
Ahn Jung-hwan married broadcaster Lee Hye-won in 2001, and they have two sons. In 2012, he appeared on the entertainment program "Dad! Where Are We Going?" with his son Ahn Ri-geon, earning the image of a 'national dad.' He is known to be proficient in multiple languages (Japanese, Italian, English, etc.) based on his experience playing for clubs in various countries including Japan and Italy. In addition to his fame as a footballer, he also attracted attention for his fashion sense and stylish image.
