Aion 2
Overview
Aion 2 is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by NCSoft, and the official numbered sequel to its predecessor, 'Aion', which launched in 2008 and became a hit in Korea and abroad. While inheriting the predecessor's core identity—the factional conflict between the Elyos (천족) and Asmodians (마족), and 'flight combat', in which characters freely fly through the sky—it was developed with modern Unreal Engine-based graphics and a cross-platform environment spanning mobile and PC.

Development Background
Aion 2 was revealed as part of NCSoft's strategy to reinterpret its flagship IPs following the Lineage series. Its existence became known through earnings presentations and new title lineup announcements after 2022, and the company positioned Aion 2 as one of its next-generation core revenue sources. As the predecessor established itself as a representative Korean MMORPG in the late 2000s and early 2010s, expectations for the sequel were accompanied by demands from the original fanbase for validation.
World and Story
The world is an extension of the predecessor's. Set in Atreia, the structure of conflict between the light faction, the Elyos (천족; Eresians), and the dark faction, the Asmodians (마족; Asmodians), is maintained, with an added conflict structure involving the third force, the Balaur (용족), and ancient races. Players belong to a specific faction and follow a narrative that confronts inter-faction conflict, disputes between races, and fundamental threats to the world.
Game Features
The biggest feature is, of course, flight. Characters can unfold wings in certain areas to freely ascend and glide, and combat and movement in the air become a core axis of strategy. Added to this are faction-versus-faction (PvP) content, PvE progression in fields and dungeons, and large-scale siege warfare and fortress capture content. It also introduces enhanced auto-combat and convenience features compared with the predecessor, character customization, and a skill combination system, aiming for smooth play even in mobile environments.
Platform and Service
Aion 2 was developed as a cross-platform title supporting both mobile and PC. This structure inherits NCSoft's multiplatform know-how built through Lineage W, Lineage 2M, and Throne and Liberty, and allows users to enjoy the game with the same account without device restrictions. For service regions, a strategy of starting first in Korea and Taiwan and expanding in stages was discussed.
Business Model
NCSoft's trademark free-to-play (free access + sales of probability-based items and currency) model is expected to be applied. In this regard, obligations to disclose probability-based item information, youth protection, and controversies over pay-to-win inducement have been major issues before and after launch.
Latest Trends
Large-scale demonstrations and information disclosures took place through a domestic game exhibition in 2024, and testing and launch preparations continued afterward. As of 2024–2025, Aion 2 is classified as a key title among NCSoft's new lineup, and its launch timing, service regions, and BM (business model) method have emerged as major industry interests. At the same time, as the domestic MMORPG market shows fatigue with mobile-centered auto-combat and monetization structures, the key to success is evaluated to be how well Aion 2 can leverage differentiators such as the predecessor's distinctive faction conflict and flight combat. In the global market, the trend continues of targeting Asia first, including Southeast Asia, Taiwan, and Japan, and afterward reviewing entry into North America and Europe.
Evaluation and Prospects
Aion 2 has strengths such as strong IP recognition and being from a major developer, but it also bears the burden of an already saturated MMORPG market and heightened user expectations. The balance between elements that evoke nostalgia for the predecessor and modern convenience, as well as the completeness of large-scale PvP content that leverages the faction conflict structure, are likely to determine its success.
