Arrival (到着) refers to the event or state in which people, goods, means of transportation, signals, information, etc. reach a destination or a specific point. As a concept symmetrical to departure (出發), it is used as a key indicator in various fields such as movement, transport, communication, and logistics. In everyday life, the arrival time of a means of transportation is the most familiar usage, but in science and technology the meaning extends to the reaching of signals, waves, and packets, and in logistics to the reaching of cargo at its final point.

Etymology and linguistic meaning

  • It is a word formed by combining the Hanja 到 (to reach) and 着 (to attach), meaning “to reach and attach,” that is, to reach a destination.
  • Its antonyms include departure, departure of a vehicle, and takeoff, and it corresponds to English arrival.
  • Derived expressions such as “to arrive,” “destination,” and “estimated time of arrival (ETA)” are widely used.
  • In Korean, it is used not only for simple physical reaching but also as an auxiliary expression indicating that a certain phase or point in time has been reached.

Arrival in transportation

  • In rail, aviation, buses, shipping, etc., arrival time is a key element of operating plans.
  • Punctuality is measured by the difference between the arrival time and the scheduled time, and is used as an indicator of transportation service quality.
  • At airports, landing and gate arrival are sometimes distinguished.
  • For flights, the estimated time of arrival (ETA) is updated in real time and provided to passengers and relevant personnel.
  • At stations and terminals, arrival announcements and electronic display boards have become standard facilities.

Arrival in logistics and delivery

  • With the spread of e-commerce, delivery promises such as “guaranteed arrival” and “next-day arrival” have become key competitive advantages.
  • Last-mile delivery is the final segment in which goods arrive to the end consumer, and it accounts for a large proportion of total logistics costs.
  • Arrival notifications, real-time location tracking, and estimated arrival time guidance have become standard services.
  • In industrial logistics such as warehouse receiving and port unloading, arrival confirmation is also the starting point for inventory and schedule management.

Arrival in science and technology

  • In communications, it means that data packets arrive at a destination node, and arrival time, order, and whether they are lost determine network quality.
  • In physics, the time at which a wave or particle reaches a specific point becomes a subject of measurement, and differences in signal arrival time are used in GPS, radar, etc.
  • In astronomy, because of the time it takes for light to arrive at Earth, distant celestial bodies can be observed as they appeared in the past.
  • In acoustics, differences in sound arrival time play a decisive role in spatial perception and direction recognition.

Cultural and metaphorical uses

  • It metaphorically expresses the realization of a result or event, as in “the fruit has arrived” or “the opportunity has arrived.”
  • There are many expressions comparing life’s turning points or moments of achieving a goal to “arrival.”
  • In travel and immigration narratives, the moment of arriving in a new place is treated as a symbol of identity change.

  • Real-time arrival information has become a basic feature of public transit apps, and in 2024–2025 the accuracy of AI-based arrival time prediction improved significantly.
  • With the emergence of new transportation modes such as autonomous driving and drone delivery, the definition of “arrival” and methods of verifying it are expanding.
  • In logistics, services that apply machine learning to ETA prediction to detect delivery delays in advance have become widespread.
  • In aviation and rail, efforts continue to increase on-time arrival rates through prediction-based operations management.
  • Technology that uses digital twins and sensor networks to monitor even the arrival condition of cargo in real time is at the commercialization stage.
  • On mobility platforms, integrated services have appeared that also provide guidance on congestion around the arrival point.
