《Avatar》 (Avatar) is a 2009 American epic science fiction film written, directed, and produced by James Cameron. Set on the planet Pandora in the 22nd century, it depicts the conflicts that unfold through "avatars"—human consciousness transplanted into Na'vi bodies. It is regarded as the work that popularized 3D stereoscopic imagery and performance capture technology, and it has repeatedly broken the all-time global box office record.

Production Background
Cameron had been conceiving a draft scenario for 《Avatar》 from around 1994. However, judging that the computer graphics and motion capture technology of the time could not realize the world of Pandora and the Na'vi he had imagined, he postponed production. Around 2005, as CG and 3D technology entered maturity, he began production in earnest, with roughly four years of production time and more than $237 million in production costs invested. He developed an in-house pipeline encompassing lighting, cameras, and a virtual studio, effectively pioneering the concept of "virtual production."
Worldview and Setting
Pandora, the setting, is a planet the size of Earth's moon, with a unique ecosystem in which dense tropical rainforests, floating mountains, and bioluminescent organisms coexist. Central to the setting is that the entire planet is connected through a kind of vast living network called "Eywa." The indigenous Na'vi people have blue skin, catlike faces, and tall statures reaching about 3 meters, and they maintain beliefs and culture in harmony with nature. The human side advances into Pandora to mine "Unobtanium," a precious mineral that will solve Earth's resource depletion.
Plot
Jake Sully, a former marine with a paralyzed lower body, joins the Avatar program through his twin brother's legacy. Connecting to Pandora through an avatar, Jake meets the Na'vi Neytiri and is incorporated into their tribe, gradually awakening to Na'vi values and Pandora's living order. However, as conflict intensifies between the human military organization pressing ahead with the mining and the Na'vi, Jake is placed in a situation where he must choose which side to stand on. The film weaves the themes of colonialism, environmental destruction, and identity into a popular narrative.
Technological Innovation
《Avatar》 combined performance capture, real-time virtual cameras, a head-mounted-display-based preview system, and advanced 3D filming techniques. To convey a natural sense of depth to audiences, Cameron and cinematographer Vince Pace developed their own 3D camera rig, and these technologies later influenced the production standards of Hollywood blockbusters.
