Overview

Bears are the collective name for large mammals belonging to the family Ursidae in the order Carnivora. They are distributed across Eurasia and North America in the Northern Hemisphere, as well as parts of the Andes in South America. In East Asia, including the Korean Peninsula, the Asian black bear and the brown bear are known to have inhabited the region. As apex predators and seed dispersers, bears play an important role in maintaining ecosystem balance, and they are also symbolic animals featured in myths and folktales across many cultures.

Classification and Species

There are currently eight extant species in the bear family. Representative species include the polar bear (Ursus maritimus), brown bear (Ursus arctos), American black bear (Ursus americanus), Asian black bear (Ursus thibetanus), sun bear (Helarctos malayanus), sloth bear (Melursus ursinus), spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus), and giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca). Among these, the giant panda is sometimes classified into a separate subfamily within the bear family due to its dietary habits and genetic characteristics. In Korea, brown bears and Asian black bears historically inhabited the region, but their populations plummeted during the Japanese colonial period and the industrialization process. Currently, the Asian black bear is designated as an endangered species, and restoration projects are underway.

Ecology and Habitat

Bears have remarkable environmental adaptability and are found in a wide range of habitats, including tundra, coniferous forests, temperate deciduous forests, tropical rainforests, and even desert edges. Most species are omnivorous, feeding on fruits, roots, insects, small mammals, and fish, while the polar bear is primarily carnivorous, hunting seals. Bears exhibit seasonal migration or hibernation habits; in particular, species living in cold regions hibernate during winter, using body fat as an energy source. During hibernation, heart rate and body temperature drop significantly, and they possess physiological mechanisms that minimize muscle loss.

Biological Characteristics

Adult bear body weight varies by species, ranging from the sun bear at less than 30 kg to the polar bear at over 700 kg. Bears have a highly developed sense of smell, allowing them to detect food from several kilometers away, while their eyesight is relatively weak, though they do have color vision. Both front and hind paws have five toes, and their claws are long and curved, useful for digging or catching prey. Bears generally live solitary lives and meet during the summer mating season. Females give birth to cubs during hibernation, delivering one to four cubs per litter. Cubs stay with their mother for one to two years, learning hunting and survival skills.

Relationship with Humans

Bears have coexisted with humans for a long time, but many species are now endangered due to habitat destruction and illegal hunting. In particular, bear bile is used as a medicinal ingredient in Eastern medicine, making bears a major target of poaching, while polar bears are threatened by the loss of sea ice caused by global warming. Meanwhile, bears are regarded as cultural symbols in many countries: they are the national animal of Russia and the symbol of the U.S. state of California, and in Korea, the bear in the Dangun myth is famous for becoming human. In recent years, their value as ecological tourism resources has also drawn attention.

Recent Trends

Around 2024 and 2025, bear-related research and conservation efforts have been actively underway. As climate change continues to reduce polar bear habitat, international cooperation on tracking polar bear populations and expanding protected areas has been strengthened. In 2024, a study using satellite tracking revealed the correlation between polar bear movement paths and hunting success rates, which is being used as important data for conservation policy formulation. Additionally, advances in genetic analysis have confirmed hybridization among bear species; in particular, hybrid individuals between brown bears and polar bears have been discovered, prompting ongoing discussions about species boundaries. In South Korea, the Asian black bear restoration project has been underway in Jirisan since 2017, and as of 2025, an estimated 80 or so individuals are believed to inhabit the area. Along with population recovery, efforts to reduce human-bear conflicts include the introduction of smart fencing and deterrent devices, as well as campaigns to improve resident awareness.
