History and Development
CGV took its first step in April 1998 with the opening of Gangbyeon CGV. At the time, it introduced a multiplex format with more than 10 screening rooms for the first time in South Korea, bringing innovation to the movie-watching culture. Subsequently, it experienced rapid growth in the early 2000s, introducing the first IMAX screen in South Korea in 2004 and unveiling 4DX technology in 2009, offering audiences a new cinematic experience. In the 2010s, it expanded into overseas markets, developing operations in China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Turkey, and others, establishing itself as a global multiplex chain.
Key Services and Technologies
CGV goes beyond simple film screenings by introducing various additional services and cutting-edge technologies to differentiate itself. Representative technologies include 4DX (an experiential screening room combining motion seats and environmental effects), IMAX (large screens and high-quality sound), ScreenX (a 270-degree multi-projection system), and Dolby Cinema. Additionally, CGV operates premium auditoriums such as 'Private Box,' 'Comfort Zone,' and 'Gold Class' to meet diverse customer needs. The reservation system via mobile app and website enhances convenience, and the CGV membership points system secures loyal customers.
Business Structure and Revenue Model
CGV's primary revenue source comes from movie ticket sales, but sales from concessions (popcorn, beverages, etc.), advertising revenue, and operation of ancillary facilities (game rooms, exhibition spaces, etc.) also account for a significant portion. In particular, concession revenue contributes greatly to overall profitability due to high margins. Furthermore, CGV participates in film distribution, pursuing vertical integration. It secures a stable content supply chain through synergy with CJ ENM's film production and distribution division.
Competitors and Market Position
In the domestic multiplex market, CGV is considered one of the 'Big Three' alongside Lotte Cinema and Megabox, maintaining the top market share. CGV operates approximately 200 or more branches nationwide, expanding its network not only in the Seoul metropolitan area but also in small and medium-sized cities in the provinces. Recently, it has strengthened its market dominance through collaborations with small independent and art film theaters, as well as partnerships with local small-scale theaters.
Recent Trends
From 2024 to 2025, CGV has shown a recovery trend following the COVID-19 pandemic, with audience numbers and revenue gradually increasing. In particular, in 2024, performance significantly improved due to the box office success of Korean films such as 'Exhuma' and 'The Roundup: Punishment,' as well as successive releases of Hollywood blockbusters like 'Inside Out 2' and 'Dune: Part Two.' In 2025, CGV is introducing an AI-based personalized content recommendation system and expanding the application of automation technologies such as unmanned kiosks and robot cleaners to enhance operational efficiency. Additionally, driven by the global popularity of K-content, the performance of overseas subsidiaries is improving, with notable growth particularly in the Vietnam and Indonesia markets. CGV plans to undergo business restructuring in some overseas markets in the first half of 2025 and strengthen a profitability-focused management strategy. Furthermore, in response to intensifying competition from OTT (online video services), it is expanding investment in premium screening rooms and actively growing its 'non-film content' business, which screens various content such as sports broadcasts, concert live streams, and gaming tournaments in addition to movies.
