Foundation and early history

Chelsea was founded on March 10, 1905, to utilize Stamford Bridge stadium, built by Henry Miller and his brothers. The club name derives from the nearby area of Chelsea; in its early days, it moved between regional leagues and the English second division while building its foundation. In the 1954-55 season, it won the English first division (then the First Division) for the first time, beginning to attract attention.

Golden age and challenge for the European summit

In 2003, Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich acquired the club, leading to large-scale investment, and in 2004, with the appointment of manager José Mourinho, the club achieved two consecutive Premier League titles (2004-05, 2005-06). Afterwards, renowned managers such as Carlo Ancelotti and Antonio Conte took charge and the club repeatedly won the league, and in 2012 and 2021 it reached the top of the UEFA Champions League. In particular, in the 2021 final, it defeated Manchester City and lifted the Big Ears trophy for the second time.

Stamford Bridge

The home stadium Stamford Bridge, opened in 1877, is one of the oldest football-specific stadiums in England, with a capacity of about 40,000. It is located on Fulham Road in West London, and near the stadium are Chelsea Village, a symbol of Chelsea, and the club museum.

Rivalries

Chelsea has fierce derby rivalries with London-based Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, West Ham United, and others. In particular, the 'London Derby' with Tottenham is considered one of the representative rivalries in the Premier League. It also has a strong rivalry with Manchester United, Liverpool, and others through competition for the league title.

Symbols and culture

Chelsea's symbol color is Royal Blue, and its emblem features a crest of a lion holding a staff. The club's nicknames are 'The Blues' or 'The Blue Lions.' The fan supporters are called 'Chelsea Supporters' and have a large fanbase worldwide.

Recent Trends (2024-2025)

After owner Abramovich sold the club in 2022 due to sanctions, a U.S. consortium (Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital) took over as the new owner, and the club's operating method changed greatly. Since then, it has been rebuilding the team centered on signing young players and long-term contracts, and under manager Enzo Maresca, it has introduced possession-based tactics and is aiming for a top league position. In the 2024-25 season, it is competing with the goal of entering the top four of the Premier League along with results in European competitions such as the Conference League, and the performance of emerging stars such as Cole Palmer has become a key driving force for the team. Meanwhile, controversies over financial sustainability regulations (PSR) issues and large-scale transfer spending are also being raised, making securing the soundness of future club operations a major task.
