Dario Amodei

Co-founder and CEO of Anthropic, an AI researcher leading AI safety and large language model research

Dario Amodei

Overview

Dario Amodei is an American artificial intelligence researcher and entrepreneur, and the co-founder and CEO of the AI safety company Anthropic. He served as Vice President of Research at OpenAI, where he led the development of large language models such as GPT-2 and GPT-3, and later founded Anthropic with the goal of developing safe and trustworthy AI. He is regarded as a leading advocate of "Responsible Scaling" and interpretability research.

Birth and Academic Background

Dario Amodei was born in 1983 in San Francisco, USA. His father was an Italian-American physicist, and his mother was Jewish; his older sister, Daniela Amodei, is also a co-founder of Anthropic. He earned a bachelor's degree in physics from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and a doctorate in biophysics from Princeton University. During his doctoral studies, he researched neuroscience and electrophysiology and learned statistical and computational approaches to complex systems, which later became the foundation for his AI research. He subsequently worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University.

Career: Baidu, Google Brain, OpenAI

Amodei began deep learning research in 2014 at Baidu's Silicon Valley research lab, where he achieved results in speech recognition and natural language processing. He then moved to Google Brain, participating in research on deep learning scaling and reinforcement learning. In 2016, he joined OpenAI, where as Vice President of Research he oversaw the development of large language models such as GPT-2 and GPT-3. Through research on scaling laws, he played a key role in clarifying the relationship between model size, data, and compute and performance.

Founding Anthropic and Its Mission

In 2021, Amodei founded Anthropic together with OpenAI colleagues, including his older sister Daniela Amodei. The core motivation for founding the company was to seriously address safety and alignment issues amid the rapid development of AI. Through its self-developed large language model Claude series, Anthropic pursues both commercial success and safety research, and in 2023 it attracted large-scale investment from Google and Amazon.

AI Safety Philosophy and Major Writings

Amodei believes AI can bring enormous benefits to humanity, while also emphasizing the danger of uncontrollable superintelligence. Through the "Responsible Scaling Policy," he presented a framework that restricts development and deployment in stages according to the risk level of a model. In 2024, he published the essay "Machines of Loving Grace," which presented an optimistic scenario in which powerful AI could contribute to biology, medicine, and economic development, generating significant resonance.

Recent Developments

As of 2024–2025, Amodei has emerged as a central figure in discussions of AI regulation and safety. He has stressed the need for AI safety regulation to the U.S. Congress and governments around the world, and Anthropic has expanded its position in the frontier model competition by successively releasing the Claude 3, Claude 3.5, and Claude 4 series. It is also strengthening strategic partnerships with Amazon and Google and expanding investment in AI interpretability and alignment research. He continues to emphasize the balance between safety and innovation, saying that "AI will become the most important technology in human history."
