Denmark
Overview
Denmark (Danish: Danmark) is a constitutional monarchy comprising the Jutland Peninsula in southern Scandinavia in Northern Europe and about 400 islands. Its capital is Copenhagen, its official language is Danish, and its currency is the Danish krone (DKK). It is considered one of the most livable countries in the world due to its high welfare standards, social trust, and eco-friendly energy policies, and it consistently ranks near the top in UN sustainable development and happiness index assessments.

Geography and Population
Mainland Denmark shares a land border with Germany to the south, and faces the North Sea to the west and the Baltic Sea to the east. Greenland and the Faroe Islands form the Kingdom of Denmark as autonomous territories. The population is about 5.9 million, with a significant portion concentrated in the capital region of Copenhagen. The terrain consists mostly of low-lying plains, and its long coastline has fostered maritime transport and fishing.
History
During the Viking Age (8th–11th centuries), Denmark exerted powerful influence across Scandinavia and the European coast. In the 10th century, Harald Bluetooth accepted Christianity, unifying the kingdom. In the Middle Ages, through the Kalmar Union, it formed a union kingdom spanning Northern Europe together with Sweden and Norway. Later, through the 19th century, it lost Norway and Schleswig-Holstein, reducing its territory, and during World War II it suffered occupation by Nazi Germany. After the war, it participated in NATO and European integration, laying the foundations of the modern welfare state.
Politics and Society
Denmark is a constitutional monarchy centered on the House of Glücksburg, one of the oldest royal houses in the world. The parliament is the unicameral Folketing, and coalition governments are formed through multi-party proportional representation elections. Based on agreements between strong labor unions and employers' organizations (the flexicurity model), it maintains both a flexible labor market and a high social safety net. Free healthcare and education and generous parental and unemployment benefits are representative welfare systems, and despite high tax rates, social trust and satisfaction are very high.
Economy
Denmark is a small but strong economy that, relative to its population size, has many world-class companies in pharmaceuticals (Novo Nordisk), wind power (Vestas), shipping (Maersk), and toys (LEGO). It covers more than half of its total electricity with renewable energy such as wind power and is regarded as a leader in energy transition. It has not joined the eurozone and maintains its own currency, and is characterized by a high degree of external openness and stable public finances.
Culture
Denmark has produced cultural and artistic figures such as fairy-tale writer Hans Christian Andersen, philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, and designer Arne Jacobsen. Its lifestyle culture represented by 'hygge,' eco-friendly bicycle-centered transportation, Nordic design and minimalism, and trust-based social norms attract international attention. It also expanded its influence in food culture by leading the world's first 'gourmet open sandwich' culture and the New Nordic cuisine boom.
Recent Trends
In 2024–2025, Denmark is strengthening its Arctic policy in response to geopolitical tensions and security issues surrounding Greenland. Strong sales of Novo Nordisk's obesity and diabetes treatments have caused pharmaceutical exports to surge, driving economic growth, but the risk of dependence on a specific industry has also come to the fore. In the climate field, the 2030 greenhouse gas reduction target, expansion of carbon taxes, and investment in offshore wind and hydrogen infrastructure continue, and administrative innovation through the introduction of artificial intelligence and digital public services is also active. In addition, immigration and integration policy, the sustainability of welfare finances amid aging, and expanded security cooperation within the European Union are being discussed as major political agendas. Denmark is also playing an active role in supporting Ukraine and strengthening European defense.
