Diablo

Overview

Diablo is a representative action role-playing game (ARPG) series developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment, and the name of its first installment. Since the release of the first game in 1996, it has been regarded as the founder of a genre combining hack and slash, dungeon crawling, and random item farming, and is one of Blizzard's core franchises, having sold tens of millions of copies worldwide. It is characterized by a dark gothic fantasy worldview and a narrative of an eternal war between angels and demons set in 'Sanctuary.'

Main Content

Series History

  • Diablo (1996): The original developed by Blizzard North (formerly Condor). Set in the village of Tristram, it tasks players with exploring underground dungeons while pursuing the demon Diablo, and it presented the prototype of real-time combat and item farming.
  • Diablo II (2000): Considered the series' greatest masterpiece, its polish was enhanced by the 'Lord of Destruction' (2001) expansion. It established systems that became standards for later ARPGs, including classes, skill trees, set items, and Hardcore mode.
  • Diablo III (2012): It suffered major controversy at launch due to the real-money auction house and server issues, but recovered its reputation with the 'Reaper of Souls' (2014) expansion and the introduction of seasons.
  • Diablo Immortal (2022): A mobile/PC cross-platform MMORPG. It drew huge attention along with controversy over its monetization model.
  • Diablo IV (2023): The latest numbered entry, introducing an open world, seasons, and a live-service model.
  • Diablo II: Resurrected (2021): A modern remaster of the original Diablo II.

Worldview and Narrative

At the center of the worldview is 'Sanctuary,' once a battlefield between angels and demons. The Angiris Council of angels and the demon legions of the Burning Hells are in conflict, and the Nephalem—beings born from the union of both sides—and their descendants, humans, became the inhabitants of Sanctuary. Among the seven Great Evils of the Burning Hells, Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal are the series' core antagonists. Iconic characters and organizations such as the Horadrim, Deckard Cain, and Tyrael appear repeatedly as the narrative unfolds.

Game Systems

Players choose a class (Barbarian, Sorcerer, Necromancer, Rogue, etc.), complete a 'build' combining skills and equipment, hunt monsters, and farm items by tier (common, magic, rare, legendary, set, mythic). Seasonal ladders provide new seasonal content and rewards at regular intervals and encourage leaderboard competition, while Hardcore mode, in which a character is permanently deleted upon a single death, has become the highest-difficulty challenge. The Paragon and Conqueror systems handle long-term progression elements.

Cultural Impact

Diablo popularized the farming-centered repeatable gameplay loop and directly influenced many later ARPGs such as Path of Exile, Torchlight, and Grim Dawn. Its dark art style, soundtrack, and design combining single-player and multiplayer also had a major influence on later online game design.

Recent Developments

In October 2024, Diablo IV's first expansion 'Vessel of Hatred' was released, adding the new region 'Nahantu' and the new class 'Spiritborn,' and the narrative centered on Mephisto began in earnest. After Microsoft completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard in March 2024, Diablo IV was added to Game Pass, greatly expanding accessibility. In 2025, alongside seasonal updates, a second expansion was announced, and Diablo Immortal also continues service with ongoing large-scale updates. In addition, as class balance adjustments and the introduction of new seasonal systems became routine, the live-service ARPG operating model has become a central axis of the series.
