Diego Forlán

Diego Forlán (Diego Forlán, May 19, 1979 – ) is a Uruguayan former footballer who played as a striker. He played for the Uruguay national team from 2002 to 2014, recording 36 goals in 112 matches, and notably scored 5 goals at the 2010 South Africa World Cup, winning the Golden Ball awarded to the tournament's best player. At club level, he played in major European leagues such as Atlético Madrid, Manchester United, and Villarreal, and after retirement he has been active as a coach and commentator.

Early Life and Club Career
Forlán was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. His father, Pablo Forlán, was also a former footballer, and he showed talent for football from an early age. After making his professional debut at Uruguay's Independiente in 1997, he moved to Manchester United of the English Premier League in 2002. However, during his time at Manchester United, he failed to meet expectations due to poor form and adaptation issues, and succeeded in making a comeback after transferring to Villarreal in 2004. At Villarreal, he scored 25 goals in the 2004-05 season to win the Pichichi (La Liga top scorer), and later moved to Atlético Madrid, where he reached his prime.
Peak Years at Atlético Madrid
Playing for Atlético Madrid from 2007 to 2011, he led the team to victory in the 2009-10 Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup. In particular, he scored the winning goal against Fulham in the 2010 Europa League final, leading the team to the title. During this period, he was regarded as one of the world's best strikers, and in the 2009-10 season he scored 18 goals in La Liga, becoming the team's top scorer. His powerful right-footed shooting and accurate free kicks were his trademarks.
National Team Performances
Forlán played for the Uruguay national team from 2002. He reached the semifinals at the 2004 Copa América, and at the 2010 South Africa World Cup he led Uruguay to the semifinals, finishing as the tournament's second-highest scorer (5 goals) and winning the Golden Ball. In particular, he scored a fantastic free-kick goal in the third-place match against Germany, earning acclaim from fans around the world. At the 2011 Copa América, he contributed to Uruguay's championship and was also selected as the tournament's best player. He retired from the national team after the 2014 Brazil World Cup.
Later Club Career and Retirement
After leaving Atlético Madrid, Forlán played for Inter Milan (2011-12), Brazil's Internacional (2012-13), Japan's Cerezo Osaka (2014-15), and Paraguay's Peñarol (2015-16), among others. He announced his retirement in 2016, but later briefly played for Hong Kong's Kitchee SC. He fully retired in 2018, and after retirement he has worked as a football commentator and sports brand ambassador, while also transitioning to a tennis player. He drew attention by participating in professional tennis tournaments, making him a rare case of someone with professional-level experience in multiple sports.
Latest Developments
As of 2024, Forlán is working on youth football development and coaching in his hometown of Uruguay after retirement. In 2023, he briefly managed a Uruguayan second-division team, and starting in 2024 he has focused on establishing a football academy to coach young players. In addition, he continues to communicate with the public through sports commentary and television appearances. He is also continuing his tennis activities, having entered the qualifying rounds of an ATP Challenger event in the second half of 2024. In the football world, he is remembered as an Atlético Madrid legend, and recently he attended events for the club's legendary players to meet fans.
