Digital refers to the method of representing and processing information not as continuous physical quantities but as discrete values—most representatively, the binary digits 0 and 1—along with the technologies and culture built upon it. With the development of computers, semiconductors, and communications technology in the late 20th century, "digital" rose beyond a mere engineering term to become a paradigm that reshaped the foundations of the economy, society, and culture. Today, "digital transformation (DX)" has become a central keyword across industry and the public sector.

Etymology and Definition

The word "digital" derives from the Latin "digitus" (finger), referring to counting one by one on one's fingers (discrete calculation). In other words, digital is a method of breaking continuously varying values (analog) into fixed intervals and expressing them as numbers. Unlike an analog clock whose second hand moves continuously, a digital clock—which displays numbers that tick off in one-second intervals—is a representative digital device.

Differences from Analog

Analog signals vary continuously like a waveform, are vulnerable to noise, and lose quality with each copy. Digital signals, by contrast, use only defined discrete values, so even if some noise is mixed in, the original values can be restored, and copying causes almost no loss of quality. They also facilitate error detection and correction, compression, and encryption, making them advantageous for large-scale storage and transmission.

Binary and Units of Information

The smallest unit of digital information is the bit, which holds a 0 or a 1, and 8 bits together make 1 byte. Binary is used because it is physically easy to implement two stable states—such as a transistor being on or off—and because it is resistant to noise. On top of bits and bytes are built units such as kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte, and terabyte.

  • 1940s–1950s: The transistor and the first electronic computers (such as ENIAC) appeared, laying the foundation for digital computation.
  • 1960s–1970s: The invention of the integrated circuit (IC) and the microprocessor made computers smaller and cheaper.
  • 1980s–1990s: PCs spread, and digital media such as digital communications networks, CDs, and DVDs became widespread.
  • 2000s onward: With the spread of the internet, mobile, and cloud, the digitization of information proceeded explosively.

Digital technology has permeated almost every domain, including communications (mobile communications and the internet), broadcasting and media (streaming), finance (fintech and electronic payments), healthcare (digital health and telemedicine), education (e-learning), manufacturing (smart factories), national defense, and the arts.

The Digital Divide and Social Impact

Differences in digital access and proficiency give rise to the "digital divide," which can deepen inequality across class, generation, and region. At the same time, new social issues such as privacy infringement, copyright, fake news, and algorithmic bias have emerged alongside it.

As of 2024–2025, the key currents in the digital field are the spread of generative AI and large language models, a surge in investment in data center and GPU infrastructure, the practical application of digital twins and industrial metaverses, and the drafting of AI regulatory legislation in various countries. In addition, a transition toward cloud-native and edge computing, 5G and 6G communications, and post-quantum cryptography (PQC) is underway. Digital transformation has now moved beyond the level of the "paperless office" into a stage in which companies redesign their very business models around AI, while at the same time power consumption and carbon emissions, data sovereignty, and digital literacy education have emerged as important policy agendas.
