Early Phase

A relative temporal concept referring to the first stage in which an event, match, work, or process begins.

Early Phase

Overview

Early phase (Korean: 초반, 初盤) refers to the first stage in which an event, match, work, process, game, or similar undertaking begins. When the flow of time is divided into beginning, middle, and end, it corresponds to the earliest portion; its opposite concept is the late phase (Korean: 후반, 後盤), and the intermediate stage is called the middle phase (Korean: 중반, 中盤). The key point is that it is not a unit with an absolute length of time, but a relative and conventional concept whose scope varies depending on the subject and context.

Etymology and Definition

'Early phase' is a Sino-Korean word formed by combining 'cheoeum cho (初)', meaning "beginning," and 'soban ban (盤)', meaning "board," and originally referred to the opening position in a match played on a board, such as Go or Korean chess (janggi). Today it is widely applied not only to Go and janggi but also to sports such as soccer and baseball, narratives such as novels and dramas, games, business, life stages, and almost any process. Variant expressions such as 'early portion' (초반부) and 'early part' (초반전) are also used.

Early Phase in Games

In games, the early phase refers to the section after completing the tutorial in which full-scale growth begins. During this period, resources are scarce and choices are limited, and a single mistake by the player can have a major impact on the entire late phase. Therefore, in game design, the early difficulty curve and reward placement are treated as extremely important. For example, giving powerful equipment early reduces immersion, while being too stingy increases the churn rate, so careful balancing is required. In RTS and MOBA genres, 'early-game management' is used as a core concept that determines victory or defeat.

Early Phase in Sports

In ball sports such as soccer, baseball, and basketball, the early phase is a decisive section for seizing the flow of the match. In soccer, the first 15 minutes; in baseball, innings 1 through 3; and in basketball, the first quarter are classified as the early phase, and runs scored and allowed during this section greatly influence subsequent tactical operation. Taking an 'early lead' creates room to operate defensively, whereas falling behind early makes it easy to concede counterattacks by attacking recklessly. For this reason, coaches emphasize early concentration and minimizing conceded runs.

Early Phase in Narrative and Creative Work

In novels, films, and dramas, the early phase is the stage that introduces characters, presents the worldview, and plants the seeds of conflict. In narratology, this is called the 'beginning' or 'introduction,' and it is considered that a strong hook is needed to prevent readers or viewers from dropping off. Recently, the awareness has spread widely that capturing attention in a short early segment, such as the first three minutes or the first episode, determines the success or failure of content.

Early Phase in the Economy and Industry

In markets or industries, the early phase refers to the initial stage in which a new technology appears and growth potential opens up. During this period, uncertainty is high and winners and losers diverge, so first-mover effects in the early phase often lead to market dominance in the late phase. The entry strategy into the 'early market' spoken of in the startup industry is in the same context.

Latest Trends

In 2024–2025, the phenomenon of 'early-phase concentration' became even more pronounced due to the spread of generative AI and short-form content. On platforms such as YouTube and TikTok, the retention rate for the first three seconds of a video became established as a key metric determining algorithmic exposure, and in the game industry, onboarding design to reduce the first-hour churn rate of new releases emerged as a major task. In sports broadcasting as well, cases are increasing in which the early flow is analyzed in real time with AI and used for tactical prediction. In addition, as the subscription economy spread, the concept of 'early retention,' meaning that the early service experience determines churn and retention, became established as a standard term in marketing and product planning. In short, the importance of the early phase was great in the past as well, but what is different now is that, with data-driven decision-making having become widespread, it has become an object that is quantitatively measured and managed.
