ELICE Group

A South Korean edtech company group that provides a cloud-based coding practice environment and an AI education platform.

ELICE Group

Overview

ELICE Group (엘리스그룹) is a South Korean corporate group specializing in AI and software education. It provides a cloud-based learning platform that enables coding practice with only a browser, along with AI education services. It is rooted in ELICE (엘리스), founded in 2015 by Professor Kim Jae-won (김재원) of KAIST's School of Computing, and it simultaneously carries out hands-on SW and AI education for universities, companies, and public institutions as well as coding education for elementary, middle, and high school students. Since the spread of generative AI, it has been expanding its business areas into personalized learning, AI competency assessment, and LLM-based tutoring.

Key Details

Establishment Background and History

ELICE's starting point was the awareness of the problem of 'coding practice without installation.' It grew by creating a web-based practice infrastructure that allows learners to immediately write, run, and evaluate code without spending time setting up a development environment, and by distributing it to university introductory programming classes. It later accumulated educational operation capabilities by carrying out government-supported projects such as the SW-Centered University project and K-Digital Training, and as its content, technology, and service organizations expanded into affiliates, it came to be called ELICE Group.

Key Services

  • ELICE Platform (ELICE): Core product that provides a browser-based coding practice environment, automatic grading, assignment and exam management, and a learning analytics dashboard.
  • ELICE Track and Academy: AI and SW bootcamps and employment-linked training courses for adult job seekers and incumbent workers.
  • ELICE School: Coding and AI education for elementary, middle, and high school students, as well as teacher training programs.
  • B2B Corporate Education: Digital transformation (DX) and AI utilization competency-building education for employees.

Technical Characteristics

The biggest differentiator is the container-based virtual practice environment. By giving each learner an isolated execution environment, learners can practice without interfering with one another, and server resources are allocated elastically to handle large-scale concurrent access. The automatic grading engine evaluates not only the correctness of submitted code but also its efficiency and exception handling, and it collects and analyzes learning logs to produce metrics for progress, incorrect-answer patterns, and engagement. Recently, it has been advancing toward automating personalized feedback—such as question answering, code review, and step-by-step hints—by combining an LLM-based AI tutor.

Organization and Ecosystem

It operates mainly around education service, content development, and platform technology organizations, and jointly designs curricula in cooperation with major domestic universities, companies, and government ministries and public institutions. University-linked credit courses, customized corporate training, and public education support projects form its main revenue axes, and it is also exploring entry into overseas edtech markets.

Recent Trends

The biggest change in 2024–2025 is that generative AI has emerged as a central agenda in the education market. ELICE Group has greatly expanded practical AI curricula such as LLM usage, prompt engineering, AI ethics, and data literacy, and it is shifting its focus from simple coding education to education for 'AI utilization competency.'

Second, school-targeted services are being strengthened in response to public education policy changes such as the introduction of AI digital textbooks. Features that support classroom instruction—such as teacher dashboards, learning diagnostics, and personalized question recommendations—are being highlighted.

Third, as demand for AI transformation (AX) education for incumbent workers surges, the proportion of corporate education is growing. GPU-based practice environments, cloud cost optimization, and learning agent technology have emerged as core competitiveness.

Fourth, the competitive landscape is intensifying. As domestic and foreign edtech companies and bootcamp operators proliferate, ELICE Group is attempting to differentiate itself with its practice infrastructure, accumulated learning data, and university and corporate references.

Meanwhile, dependence on government projects, quality management of educational content, competition to secure AI talent, and changes in education market regulation are cited as tasks that must be continuously managed.
