Fireboat
Overview
A fireboat (消防艇, Fireboat) is a vessel specially designed to suppress fires and rescue people on water, including in ports, coastal areas, rivers, and lakes. It can directly spray large volumes of water and extinguishing agents onto maritime and waterfront facilities that ordinary fire engines cannot reach, and it is operated by maritime police, fire authorities, port authorities, and similar organizations. It is fundamentally distinct from land-based firefighting equipment in that the vessel itself serves as a mobile fire pump station and a rescue base.

Definition and Functions
A fireboat is a special-purpose vessel whose primary mission is fire suppression, fitted with a large-capacity seawater pump and water monitors inside the hull so that a substantial discharge rate can be secured even at long range. Its main functions are as follows.
- Fire suppression: Water and foam extinguishing for fires on vessels moored at docks, offshore structures, and buildings adjacent to the shore
- Rescue of life: Rescue of persons overboard, extraction of trapped persons, and evacuation support
- Disaster prevention support: Oil spill response, hazardous materials incident response, and prevention of fire spread
- Waterborne safety: Port patrols, safety support for large events, and acting as a forward response base
History
The origins of the modern fireboat trace back to the port cities of 19th-century Europe and the United States. As dock fires increasingly spread to entire cities during the steamship era, steam-engine-driven firefighting vessels were introduced in places such as London, England, and New York, United States, in the mid-19th century. Subsequently, with the development of diesel engines and high-pressure pump technology in the 20th century, discharge capacity and maneuverability improved greatly, and today fireboats have evolved into modern vessels equipped with fully automatic monitors and thermal imaging equipment.
Types and Classification
Fireboats are classified in various ways according to operational purpose and size.
- Large port fireboats: Responsible for fires on large vessels and disaster prevention across an entire port, with the greatest discharge capacity.
- Small and medium fireboats: Suited to initial response making the most of maneuverability on rivers, lakes, and coastal waters.
- Multipurpose rescue boats: Carry out rescue of life and diving support missions alongside water-discharge capability.
- High-speed fireboats: Deployed in areas requiring rapid response, with an emphasis on speed.
Main Onboard Equipment
- Fire pumps: Large-capacity seawater pumps on the order of tens of thousands of liters per minute, supporting both onboard discharge and shore-based water supply simultaneously
- Water monitors: Remotely operable high-pressure discharge nozzles with a range of up to several tens to around a hundred meters
- Foam extinguishing systems: Foam-generating devices and agent tanks for responding to oil fires
- Thermal imaging cameras and searchlights: Detection of the seat of a fire at night and in smoke
- Rescue equipment: Rescue boats, life-saving equipment, ladders, and diving support equipment
- Self-protection systems: Water curtains on the hull to block radiant heat
Operating Organizations
The operating entities differ by country. In South Korea, the maritime police, fire authorities, and port authorities cooperate, while in the United States, fire departments of major cities generally operate port fireboats. Japan has a system in which the Fire and Disaster Management Agency and port fire brigades are responsible.
Representative Examples
World-famous fireboats include the "John J. Harvey" of New York, United States, the large fireboats of the Port of Los Angeles, and large firefighting vessels of Tokyo Bay, Japan. They are recorded as having played decisive roles in fires on large vessels and port disasters.
Latest Trends
As of 2024–2025, three trends are clear in the fireboat field: electrification, autonomy, and eco-friendliness. First, battery-electric fireboats are being introduced, centered on Europe and the Nordic countries, reducing exhaust emissions and noise while strengthening the ability to sortie immediately while moored. Second, as three-dimensional response systems linking drones and unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) spread, cases are increasing in which fireboats are used as mother ships and command bases for unmanned equipment. Third, attempts are under way to optimize water-discharge strategies in real time by installing digital twin and AI-based fire spread prediction systems. In addition, as climate change increases cases of large wildfires spreading to coastal areas, supporting coastal wildfire suppression using seawater discharge is emerging as a new role for fireboats.
