Rites vary by religion—Buddhism, Protestantism, Catholicism, Confucianism, etc.—and for non-religious individuals, simplified forms may be adopted.

Visits from mourners, condolence money, and funeral flowers help alleviate the economic and emotional burden on the family. Third, the introduction of digital technology has led to online memorial halls, virtual reality (VR) memorial services, and AI-based funeral consultations. Fourth, the increase in single-person households and an aging population are driving demand for pre-arranged funeral plans and funeral insurance. Fifth, following the COVID-19 pandemic, non-face-to-face funerals and small family funerals have become common and remain a lasting cultural practice. Additionally, alongside criticism of the commercialization of funerals, there is a trend toward rediscovering traditional rites and adopting simplified, customized funerals.
