Geoje Bridge
Overview
Geoje Bridge is a bridge connecting Geoje City and Tongyeong City in Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea, and is the first land-link bridge connecting Geoje Island to the mainland. Completed on April 14, 1971, it was built as the country's first cable-stayed bridge (斜張橋) and is regarded as a structure symbolizing the advancement of civil engineering technology at the time. With a total length of 740m and a width of 10m (two lanes round trip), it dramatically improved transportation accessibility to Geoje Island, greatly contributing to regional economic revitalization and tourism industry development.

Construction Background and History
Geoje Island is a large island located off the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula, and for a long time, transportation to the mainland relied on ships. As economic development plans were promoted in the 1960s, a connection to the mainland became essential for the development of Geoje Island's shipbuilding and fisheries industries. Construction began in 1968 and was completed in 1971 after about three years of work, making it one of the largest bridge construction projects in the country at the time. Hyundai Engineering & Construction participated in the construction, and the cable-stayed bridge method was introduced with technical support from Japan.
Structure and Design Features
Geoje Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge with two main towers (主塔) and cables supporting the deck. The main towers are approximately 60m high, with steel cables arranged radially to distribute the bridge's load. The central span length (徑間長) is 200m, which was the longest span in the country at the time. The bridge deck is made of reinforced concrete, and corrosion-resistant design was applied considering the marine environment. In particular, wind-resistant design was strengthened to withstand typhoons and sea winds.
Economic and Social Impact
The opening of Geoje Bridge reduced travel time between Geoje Island and the mainland by over an hour, and the reduction in logistics costs and increase in tourists revitalized the regional economy. The population of Geoje City has steadily increased since the 1970s, contributing to the development of the shipbuilding industry (Samsung Heavy Industries, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering). Additionally, Geoje Island emerged as a tourist destination, improving access to major attractions such as Haegeumgang and Oedo.
Maintenance and Safety Management
As more than 50 years have passed since its completion, Geoje Bridge has aged, requiring regular inspections and repairs. In the 2010s, seismic reinforcement work and cable replacement were carried out, and in 2020, bridge deck repairs and painting work were completed. The Korea Expressway Corporation and Geoje City cooperate to conduct regular safety inspections and implement measures such as restricting heavy vehicle traffic.
Cultural Value
Geoje Bridge has become a local landmark beyond being a mere transportation facility. The area around the bridge is famous as a night view spot and has been used as a filming location for dramas and movies. Additionally, Geoje Bridge is a symbolic structure showcasing the history of modern civil engineering technology in South Korea, and in 2019, it was designated as a Registered Cultural Heritage of South Korea.
Latest Trends
As of 2024, large-scale repair work is underway on Geoje Bridge due to aging. The Korea Expressway Corporation is investing a total of 20 billion won from 2023 to 2025 to carry out bridge deck reinforcement, cable replacement, and seismic performance improvement. Additionally, Geoje City began a project in the second half of 2024 to replace the nighttime landscape lighting with LEDs and create an observation deck and walking trail nearby to turn Geoje Bridge into a tourism resource. Meanwhile, due to increased traffic on Geoje Bridge, the expansion of the parallel Geoje–Tongyeong national highway is scheduled for completion in 2025, which is expected to distribute the role of Geoje Bridge. Furthermore, in October 2024, a special exhibition highlighting the historical value of Geoje Bridge was held at the Geoje City Culture and Arts Center.
