The Hyundai Grandeur (현대 그랜저) is a semi-large sedan produced and sold by Hyundai Motor Company since 1986. It is one of the models with the longest history and highest recognition in the South Korean automobile market, introducing innovative designs and advanced technologies with each generation, solidifying its position as the nation's flagship sedan. 1st Generation (1986-1992)
The Grandeur was launched in July 1986 as Hyundai's first front-wheel-drive semi-large sedan. It was developed through a technical partnership with Mitsubishi and featured 2.0L and 2.4L gasoline engines. At the time, it led in safety by offering ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and airbags as options for the first time in South Korea.
2nd Generation (1992-1998)
The 2nd generation, released in 1992, was called the 'New Grandeur' and applied an independent design language. A 3.0L V6 engine was added to enhance luxury, and convenience features such as electronic suspension and automatic air conditioning were significantly expanded. In 1996, a facelift led to the name being changed to Grandeur XG.
3rd Generation (1998-2005)
The 3rd generation, launched in 1998 as the 'Grandeur TG', was a model that fully reflected Hyundai's independent development capabilities. It featured a 3.3L V6 Lambda engine and a 5-speed automatic transmission, and was the first in South Korea to come standard with curtain airbags and Electronic Stability Program (ESP). From this generation, the Grandeur gained explosive popularity, being called the 'national large car'.
4th Generation (2005-2011)
The 4th generation 'Grandeur HG', released in 2005, was the first model to apply Hyundai's 'Fluidic Sculpture' design language. It was equipped with a 3.8L V6 engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission, and introduced advanced driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control and a rearview camera. In 2009, a hybrid model was added to expand the eco-friendly lineup.
5th Generation (2011-2016)
The 5th generation 'Grandeur IG', launched in 2011, applied Hyundai's 'Fluidic Sculpture 2.0' design, emphasizing a sportier image. It featured a 3.0L GDi engine and an 8-speed automatic transmission, improving fuel efficiency and performance, and significantly enhanced advanced safety features such as Smart Park Assist and Lane Departure Warning.
6th Generation (2016-2022)
The 6th generation 'Grandeur IG', released in 2016, was developed on a completely new platform. A 2.2L diesel engine was added to broaden choices, and the 3.3L V6 turbo model gained popularity as a high-performance version. In 2019, a facelift upgraded it to 'The New Grandeur', incorporating a digital instrument cluster and large display.
7th Generation (2022-Present)
The 7th generation 'Grandeur GN7', launched in November 2022, applied Hyundai's 'Sensuous Sportiness' design, showcasing the boldest styling ever. It offers various powertrains including a 2.5L gasoline turbo, 3.5L V6 gasoline, and 1.6L hybrid, with the hybrid model particularly popular for its excellent fuel efficiency. Cutting-edge convenience features such as a 12.3-inch dual display, digital key, and remote smart parking assist are applied. In 2024, a facelift model was released with refined design and the addition of OTA (over-the-air software update) functionality.

As of 2024-2025, the Hyundai Grandeur maintains an unrivaled position in the domestic semi-large sedan market. The 7th generation model has consistently sold over 10,000 units per month since its launch, holding its place as a best-seller. In particular, the hybrid model's sales share has exceeded 60%, actively responding to the eco-friendly trend. Hyundai Motor Company is reportedly preparing to launch an electric vehicle (EV) version of the Grandeur in the second half of 2025, which is expected to be a key model in Hyundai's electrification strategy. Additionally, the 2024 facelift further refined the design and strengthened Level 2+ highway driving assist (HDA 2) functions.
