History
The Icheon area was originally 'Namcheon-hyeon (南川縣)' of Baekje during the Three Kingdoms period and was renamed 'Hwangmu-hyeon (黃武縣)' under King Gyeongdeok of Silla. During the Goryeo period, it was called 'Iju (利州),' and in the 13th year of King Taejong of Joseon (1413), it became 'Icheon-hyeon (利川縣).' In 1895, with the implementation of the 23-bu system, it became Icheon-gun under Chungju-bu, and in 1914, through the consolidation of bu, gun, and myeon, it became Icheon-gun. On March 1, 1996, it was elevated to an urban-rural complex city, becoming the present-day Icheon-si.
Geography and Climate
Icheon is traversed by branches of the Charyeong Mountain Range, resulting in a topography that is higher in the east and lower in the west. To the north lies Yangja-san (altitude 709m), and to the south, Seolbong-san (altitude 394m). The Bokha-cheon and Cheongmi-cheon streams flow through the city, eventually joining the Namhan River. The climate is influenced by a continental climate, with cold, dry winters and hot, humid summers. The average annual temperature is 11.5°C, and the annual precipitation is about 1,300mm.
Administrative Divisions
Icheon-si consists of 2 eup (Janghowon-eup, Bubal-eup), 8 myeon (Sindun-myeon, Baeksa-myeon, Hobeop-myeon, Majang-myeon, Daewol-myeon, Moga-myeon, Seolseong-myeon, Yul-myeon), and 4 dong (Jungni-dong, Gwan-go-dong, Jeungpo-dong, Changjeon-dong). The city hall is located in Jungni-dong.
Economy and Industry
Icheon's traditional industry is agriculture, particularly famous for rice and peaches. Icheon rice is known for its high quality, often called 'royal tribute rice,' and Icheon peaches are loved by consumers nationwide for their high sugar content and soft texture. Additionally, Icheon is a 'home of ceramics,' with a developed ceramic industry inheriting the traditions of Goryeo celadon and Joseon white porcelain. The Icheon Ceramics Festival, held annually since 1987, is a representative cultural event.
Since the 2000s, the semiconductor industry has grown rapidly. SK Hynix operates a large-scale semiconductor production plant in Icheon, and numerous partner companies and logistics facilities have moved in. Icheon-si is transforming into a 'semiconductor-specialized city,' with continuous job creation and population inflow. Additionally, as a transportation hub where the Jungbu Expressway and Yeongdong Expressway intersect, logistics and distribution industries are also active.
Culture and Tourism
Icheon-si boasts various cultural heritage sites and tourism resources. Major tourist attractions include Seolbong Park, Icheon Hot Springs, Sansuyu Village, and the mountain village in Yul-myeon. Seolbong Park is a resting place for citizens, with cherry blossoms in full bloom in spring. Icheon Hot Springs is known for its good water quality, effective for skin beauty. In addition to the 'Icheon Rice Culture Festival' and 'Icheon Ceramics Festival,' Icheon-si hosts seasonal festivals such as the 'Icheon Peach Festival' and 'Icheon Sansuyu Festival.'
Education and Transportation
Icheon-si has 22 elementary schools, 12 middle schools, and 9 high schools, along with colleges such as Korea Tourism College and Icheon Ceramic Art College (tentative name). Transportation is facilitated by the intersection of the Jungbu Expressway (Route 35) and Yeongdong Expressway (Route 50), with National Routes 3 and 37 passing through. For rail, the Jungbu Naeryuk Line (Icheon Station, Bubal Station) is in operation, and the extension of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway Gyeonggang Line opened in 2024, significantly improving access to Pangyo and Seongnam.
Latest Trends
In 2024-2025, Icheon-si is accelerating the development of a semiconductor cluster. SK Hynix announced an additional investment of 20 trillion won in the Icheon campus by 2025, strengthening Icheon-si's status as a 'semiconductor-specialized city.' Additionally, Icheon-si was selected as a pilot city for 'Smart City' in 2024, promoting the introduction of AI-based traffic management systems and smart agricultural technologies. The population exceeded 220,000 in 2023, with continued inflow expected. Meanwhile, the Icheon Ceramics Festival has shifted to an online-offline hybrid format since 2024, expanding global participation. Environmentally, the Bokha-cheon ecological stream restoration project is underway with a target completion in 2025, expanding citizens' water-friendly spaces.
