Jeong Ho-young
Overview
Jeong Ho-young (born January 27, 1968) is a South Korean legal professional and politician. A former prosecutor, he served as the 67th Minister of Justice. Originally from Daegu, he held key positions within the prosecution, including Chief Prosecutor of the Daegu District Prosecutors' Office and Vice Minister of Justice. He was appointed Minister of Justice upon the launch of the Yoon Suk Yeol government in 2022, but faced multiple controversies and resigned after about three months in office.

Early Life and Education
Jeong Ho-young was born in Daegu in 1968, graduated from Gyeongbuk High School, and entered Seoul National University's College of Law. During his university years, he passed the bar exam and embarked on a career in the legal profession.
Prosecutor Career
After passing the 36th bar exam in 1994, he was appointed as a prosecutor at the Daegu District Prosecutors' Office in 1997. He subsequently worked in major divisions such as the Central Investigation Department of the Supreme Prosecutors' Office and the Special Investigation Department of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office, building experience primarily in special investigations and public security. In the 2010s, he held key posts including Head of the Public Security Department at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office and Director of the Prosecution Bureau at the Ministry of Justice. In 2020, he was promoted to Chief Prosecutor of the Daegu District Prosecutors' Office.
Vice Minister and Minister of Justice
In 2021, during the Moon Jae-in administration, he was appointed Vice Minister of Justice and served for about a year. Subsequently, with the launch of the Yoon Suk Yeol government in 2022, he was nominated as the candidate for Minister of Justice. After a confirmation hearing, he was inaugurated as the 67th Minister of Justice on May 17, 2022.
Controversies and Resignation
Minister Jeong faced multiple controversies immediately after taking office. Major issues included allegations of preferential treatment for his son during military service, suspicions of real estate speculation, and concerns about undermining the political neutrality of the prosecution.
