League of Legends Patch Notes (롤 패치 노트)

Overview

League of Legends Patch Notes (Korean: 롤 패치 노트) is an official document in which Riot Games publicly discloses the details of regular updates to League of Legends (LoL). It contains numerical adjustments to champions, items, runes, and game systems, as well as new content and bug fixes, and is distributed roughly every two weeks, directly influencing the game's meta and the professional esports environment. Rather than being a simple list of changes, it is characterized by also describing the development team's balance intentions and future direction.

Patch Cycle and Versioning System

Regular patches are, in principle, distributed every two weeks (biweekly), with about 24 major patches per year. When urgent issues arise, such as a particular champion's win rate soaring abnormally, a hotfix is applied without waiting for the regular schedule to immediately revert the numbers. From 2009 to 2024, version notation used the format 'season number.patch number' (e.g., 13.24, 14.1), but starting with the 2025 season, it was completely overhauled to a year-based notation in the form 25.01, 25.02. This measure was intended to allow newly arriving users to intuitively grasp the timing of patches.

Components of Patch Notes

  • Champion Balance: Divided into buffs, nerfs, and adjustments, with detailed adjustments to base stats, skill ratios, cooldowns, mana costs, etc.
  • Items and Runes: Includes addition of new items, price/stat adjustments, removals, rune effect redesigns, etc.
  • Game Systems: Adjustments to jungle camp experience, epic monsters such as dragons, Rift Herald, and Baron, turret defenses, minion waves, gold acquisition structure, etc.
  • New Content: New champions, skins, limited-time modes, seasonal events, etc. are revealed together.
  • Bug Fixes and Quality-of-Life Improvements: Client stability, UI improvements, and lists of known errors are organized.
  • Ranked and Rewards: Placement match schedules, tier distribution, and criteria for season reward distribution are provided.

Balance Adjustment Method

Riot selects targets for adjustment by synthesizing win rate, pick rate, and ban rate statistics, professional match metrics, and internal test data. Champions with a large gap between regular ranked play and professional play are handled under separate criteria, and the practice of explaining 'why this change was made' through developer comments has become established. In addition, major changes are sometimes previewed through 'Patch Preview' content before the patch is applied.

Communication Channels

Patch notes are distributed through the official website and in-game client notices, and are repackaged into various channels such as YouTube 'Patch Highlights' videos, developer blogs (the /dev series), and live streams. In Korea, Inven, various communities, and statistics sites such as op.gg, u.gg, and lolalytics provide metric analysis immediately after a patch, and content interpreting the patch notes is actively produced.

Influence and Controversy

Patch notes are directly tied to the esports ecosystem. Because the League of Legends World Championship (Worlds) and regional leagues play matches on a fixed patch version, balance changes right before a tournament act as a variable that can alter draft strategies and the course of the championship. Meanwhile, as cases repeat in which certain champions are left unattended for long periods or, conversely, see their usage plummet due to excessive nerfs, criticism from the community has been raised. The fact that new champions are so strong immediately after release that 'nerfs right after release' have become a convention is also a representative point of controversy.

Latest Trends

Patch notes in 2024–2025 underwent major changes in format and operation. First, starting with the 2025 season (Season 15), patch numbering changed to a year-based system such as 25.01 and 25.02, and the season theme was set as 'Noxus.' In terms of game systems, a new epic monster, 'Atakhan,' was introduced, changing the pattern of mid-game objective fights, and jungle- and objective-related numbers were readjusted several times. As for new champions, following Aurora and Ambessa in 2024, Mel joined in early 2025, and further new champions and reworks continued to be announced in sequence.

In terms of operation, a redesign was carried out to improve readability by summarizing patch notes in table and card formats, and descriptions presenting the rationale for changes together with data increased. Mode diversification also became prominent, with balance adjustments for permanent and limited-time modes such as ARAM, Arena, and Ultra Rapid Fire (URF) included in regular patches, and with the introduction of the new mode 'Swiftplay' in 2025, separate adjustments were made targeting the user base that prefers shorter match times. Teamfight Tactics (TFT) operates independent patch notes on a per-set basis and has a balance cycle separate from the main League of Legends game. In 2025, the structure of dividing the season into multiple splits to distribute rank resets and reward distribution continued, and attempts to manage the density of large updates by adjusting the patch cycle itself are also ongoing. As such, League of Legends patch notes function not as simple update announcements but as a core operational document that determines the game's longevity and esports competitiveness.
