Overview

A logistics center (물류센터, Logistics Center) is a facility that performs core functions in the logistics flow, such as inbound receiving, storage, sorting, picking, packing, and outbound shipping of goods. It serves as a node connecting the entire supply chain, from the supply of raw materials in manufacturing to final consumer delivery in e-commerce. In recent years, it has been rapidly evolving beyond a simple warehouse into an intelligent logistics hub that combines automated equipment, data analytics, and robotics technology.

Definition and Distinction

Whereas a traditional warehouse focuses on inventory storage, a logistics center performs storage along with additional functions such as sorting, combining, processing, and delivery preparation. A distribution center (DC) is a hub that supplies inventory to a specific distribution network, while a fulfillment center (FC) handles the entire process from order receipt to packing and delivery. In addition, cross-docking centers, returns processing centers, and freight terminals exist as derivative forms.

Type Classification

  • Ambient, refrigerated, and frozen: These are classified by handling temperature, and cold-chain facilities are essential for fresh foods and pharmaceuticals.
  • Automated and manual: These are divided by level of automation, such as AGVs, AMRs, shuttles, and AS/RS.
  • B2B and B2C: The designs differ significantly between bulk pallet-level outbound shipping and individual parcel-level outbound shipping.
  • Hub-type and forward-deployed: These are divided into wide-area hubs and small urban-proximate hubs (micro-fulfillment).

Location Conditions

Accessibility to highway interchanges (ICs), distance to densely populated consumption areas, land prices, labor supply, and power and water infrastructure are key variables. In recent years, due to competition in early-morning delivery, suburban hubs located within 30 minutes to 1 hour of city outskirts are preferred, while small urban hubs have higher rents but shorten delivery times.

Facility Composition

It consists of inbound docks, storage racks, picking zones, sorting (sorter) areas, packing stations, outbound docks, and returns processing areas. High-density designs that maximize space efficiency by increasing ceiling height and minimizing aisles between racks are common. Temperature, humidity, and dust management and anti-static equipment are also required depending on the item.

  • TMS (Transportation Management System): dispatch and route optimization
  • OMS (Order Management System): order allocation and priority determination

Automation and Robotics Technology

AMRs (autonomous mobile robots), AGVs, automated picking robots, shuttle warehouses, sorters, vision inspection, and digital twin simulations are being introduced. Collaborative robots (cobots) reduce the labor burden in picking and packing processes, and automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) store large volumes of inventory in a small area.

Safety and Workforce

Handling heavy objects, forklift collisions, rack collapse, and fire are major risk factors. A safety and health management system under the Occupational Safety and Health Act, firefighting equipment, sprinklers, and emergency evacuation drills are required. Because the proportion of night and shift work is high, improving the working environment and responding to labor shortages are ongoing challenges.

Latest Trends

In 2024–2025, 'intelligent logistics centers' that combine ultra-large AI and robots are spreading. Operational optimization based on generative AI, improved demand forecasting accuracy, and pre-validation through digital twins are becoming standardized. As e-commerce growth slows and logistics costs rise, verifying the return on investment (ROI) for automation investments has become important; unmanned and automated nighttime operations, energy-self-sufficient green logistics centers using solar power and ESS, and the expansion of urban micro-fulfillment centers (MFCs) are notable. On the regulatory side, major issues include preventing overwork and strengthening safety for delivery workers, and coordination with local governments to resolve conflicts over logistics facility siting. Amid global supply chain restructuring and reshoring trends, investment in national and regional logistics hubs is also increasing, and the collaboration ecosystem between robotics and automation solution companies and 3PL operators is growing.
