Lotte World
Overview
Lotte World is a large-scale indoor-outdoor complex theme park and leisure and cultural complex located at 240 Olympic-ro (Jamsil-dong), Songpa-gu, Seoul. It opened on July 12, 1989, and is centered on the indoor theme park 'Adventure' and the outdoor area 'Magic Island,' built over Seokchon Lake. It is listed in Guinness World Records as one of the world's largest indoor theme parks, and it is one of Korea's representative tourist destinations, visited by millions of people annually.

Establishment and History
The Lotte Group pursued a theme park business as part of its development plan for the Jamsil area in the late 1980s, and on July 12, 1989, it opened the indoor theme park 'Adventure' along with the Folklore Museum (now Lotte World Folk Museum). In March of the following year, 1990, Magic Island, an outdoor area, opened along the shores of Seokchon Lake, completing the current two-part indoor-outdoor system. Since then, for over 30 years, it has undergone repeated facility expansions and renovations, establishing itself as a leading player in Korea's theme park industry.
Adventure (Indoor Area)
Adventure is a large indoor space spanning from two underground floors to five above-ground floors, and its greatest strength is that it can operate regardless of season or weather. Parades and performances are held around the central plaza, and various attractions are arranged, including the French Revolution, Pharaoh's Fury, Atlantis, Comet Express, World Monorail, Sinbad's Adventure, Lotty's Adventure, and the Carousel. In addition, the indoor ice rink, which has operated since the park's opening, is considered a representative facility among Korea's indoor skating rinks and is loved as experiential content available regardless of season.
Magic Island (Outdoor Area)
Magic Island is an outdoor theme area that recreates a medieval European-style castle and buildings against the backdrop of Seokchon Lake. Its symbol is the Magic Castle, and representative thrill attractions include the Gyro Drop and Gyro Swing, introduced in the early 1990s. The walking paths along the lake, the outdoor performance venue, and seasonal flower decorations come together to make it popular among family visitors and couples.
Lotte World Tower and Lotte World Mall
In April 2017, the completion of Lotte World Tower, which stands 555 m tall with 123 floors, expanded the Jamsil area into a massive complex combining a theme park, shopping, culture, and hotels. It is linked with Lotte World Mall, the Seoul Sky observation deck, and the Lotte Concert Hall, and combined tourism products that bundle theme park visits with shopping and observation deck visits are in operation.
Operations and Visitor Information
Lotte World operates year-round without closing days, and offers various ticket options, including unlimited-ride passes and comprehensive passes. It is directly connected to Jamsil Station on Subway Lines 2 and 8, giving it excellent accessibility, and it has abundant stay-type content such as nighttime parades, seasonal events, and character goods shops. Near Jamsil Station, Lotte Department Store, Lotte Mart, hotels, and other facilities are densely concentrated, forming the largest downtown area in southeastern Seoul.
Recent Developments
In 2024, marking the 35th anniversary of its opening, Lotte World actively pursued commemorative events and renovations. It is expanding IP collaboration content with Sanrio Characters, Pokémon, and popular character brands, targeting both younger people and family visitors, and seasonal themed events such as Halloween and Christmas are operated on a large scale every year. On the digital transformation front, mobile app-based smart waiting and reservation systems and virtual/metaverse-type experiential content are being introduced, and investment continues to sequentially renovate aging attractions in Magic Island and Adventure. In 2025, marketing to attract global tourists linked to K-content and strengthening products linked to Lotte World Tower and Seoul Sky are emerging as major tasks. In addition, amid climate change such as heat waves and cold waves, the advantages of indoor theme parks are being reexamined, and strategies to secure stable year-round visitor demand are drawing attention.
