Overview

The Mayor of Dangjin (唐津市長) is the head of the basic local government who oversees the administrative affairs of Dangjin-si, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea. Under the Local Autonomy Act, the mayor is elected by direct popular vote, serves a four-year term, and may serve up to three consecutive terms. Together with the city council, the mayor plays a key role in local administration, establishing and executing policies for regional development and the promotion of residents' welfare.

Roles and Authority

As the representative of Dangjin-si, the mayor performs the following roles:

  • General municipal administration: Directs and supervises the administrative agencies of Dangjin-si, appoints public officials, and holds decision-making authority over overall municipal affairs.
  • Budget formulation and execution: Formulates the budget proposal of Dangjin-si, submits it to the city council, and executes the confirmed budget.
  • Ordinance and rule enactment: Promulgates ordinances passed by the city council and may establish rules within the mayor's authority.
  • External activities: Represents Dangjin-si in negotiations and cooperation with the central government, Chungcheongnam-do, neighboring local governments, and domestic and international organizations.
  • Resolution of residents' long-standing requests: Listens to residents' complaints and promotes policies to resolve local issues.

Election and Term

The Mayor of Dangjin is elected by direct vote of residents in the nationwide simultaneous local elections held every four years under the Public Official Election Act. Any South Korean citizen aged 25 or older who is registered as a resident of Dangjin-si may run as a candidate. The term of office is four years from the day after the election, and in the case of taking office through a by-election, the mayor serves out the remainder of the predecessor's term.

Former Mayors of Dangjin

On January 1, 2010, Dangjin County (Dangjin-gun) was promoted to Dangjin City (Dangjin-si). The first popularly elected mayor after the promotion was Lee Cheol-hwan, elected in the June 2, 2010 local elections. Subsequently, Kim Hong-jang was elected in the 6th local elections in 2014, and was re-elected in the 7th local elections in 2018, serving until 2022. In the 8th local elections in 2022, Oh Seong-hwan was elected and has been leading the city administration to the present (as of 2024).

Organization and Administrative System

Dangjin-si has one vice mayor under the mayor, along with departments, bureaus, and offices organized at the division level. Major divisions include the Planning and Budget Division, Administration and Welfare Bureau, Economy and Industry Bureau, Construction and Urban Development Bureau, Environment and Parks Bureau, Public Health Center, and Agricultural Technology Center. In addition, administrative services are provided in close contact with residents through eup, myeon, and dong community centers.

Recent Trends

As of 2024, the Mayor of Dangjin is Oh Seong-hwan, who has focused on economic revitalization and attracting population since taking office. In particular, Dangjin-si, home to large industrial complexes such as Hyundai Steel and Hyundai Oilbank, is striving to attract companies and create jobs for the stable growth of the local economy. Recently, in addition to the steel and petrochemical industries, the city has been promoting policies to foster new industries such as the hydrogen economy and renewable energy.

Also, in 2024, in response to population decline and aging, the city is implementing various population measures such as youth policies, childbirth incentives, and housing support. In addition, Dangjin-si is investing in transportation infrastructure expansion by leveraging its geographical proximity to the Seoul Capital Area, improving accessibility through the West Coast Expressway, the Dangjin-Yeongdeok Expressway, and railway line extensions.

In 2025, to realize the city administration's vision of "A vibrant economy, warm welfare, and a livable city, Dangjin," the budget is expected to focus on stabilizing people's livelihoods and securing future growth engines. The mayor's office is operating online channels and regular citizen meetings to strengthen communication with residents, expanding residents' participation in city administration.
