Mention
Overview
Mention (言及) refers to the act of bringing up, whether directly or indirectly, a particular person, object, event, or concept in speech or writing. Going beyond the mere transmission of information, the very choice of what is mentioned and what is not reflects the speaker's intentions and social context. Accordingly, mention becomes a central object of analysis in diverse academic fields, including linguistics, pragmatics, discourse analysis, media studies, and law.

Concept and Definition
In dictionary terms, mention means 'to bring up a certain matter or person in speech or writing.' The object of a mention may be a concrete entity (a person, institution, or product) or an abstract concept (an ideology, value, or policy). Mentions are divided into explicit and implicit mentions, the former referring to cases in which a name or expression is used directly, and the latter to cases in which reference is made indirectly through implication, metaphor, or omission.
Linguistics and the Use–Mention Distinction
In logic and the philosophy of language, distinguishing between 'use' and 'mention' is important. For example, in the sentence 'Seoul is a city,' 'Seoul' is used to refer to the city as an object, whereas in the sentence 'Seoul is two syllables,' 'Seoul' is mentioned as referring to the word itself. This distinction has been treated as a core issue in semantics, reference theory, and formal logic, and also serves as a basis for explaining the function of quotation marks.
Pragmatics and Discourse Analysis
Pragmatics studies how mention operates in conversational implicature and politeness strategies. A speaker may avoid responsibility by not directly mentioning a particular object, or conversely, may emphasize a particular message by intentionally mentioning it. Discourse analysis examines how often a given subject is mentioned within a text, and how the order and context of mentions reveal power relations.
Media and Public Opinion
Mention in the media has a decisive influence on the formation of public opinion. When a particular person or issue is repeatedly mentioned in the news, that object's 'visibility' increases, which leads to the agenda-setting effect. Conversely, objects that are not mentioned undergo 'silencing,' effectively losing their presence in the public sphere. For this reason, mention volume is used as a key indicator in brand reputation, political campaigns, and crisis management strategies.
Legal Aspects
In law, mention serves as a criterion for determining whether defamation, insult, or invasion of privacy is established. Even if a specific person is not named directly, if it is possible to tell from surrounding circumstances whom is being referred to, it may be regarded as a 'mention' and give rise to legal liability. Accordingly, the press and publishing carefully adjust the scope of mentions and the level of expression. In addition, whether a particular provision is mentioned in precedents or contracts is an important clue for interpretation.
Social and Cultural Functions
Mention is also connected to collective identity. What a society frequently mentions and what it does not mention reveals that society's values, taboos, and culture of memory. Whether a historical event is mentioned is tied to the politics of commemoration and forgetting, and the phenomenon in which a particular topic becomes 'taboo even to mention' in intergenerational dialogue reflects social tensions.
Latest Trends
In 2024–2025, with the spread of artificial intelligence and social media, the methods of measuring and interpreting 'mention' are changing rapidly. Social listening tools based on large language models (LLMs) collect and analyze mention volume about brands, people, and issues in real time, automatically classifying not only simple frequency but also the context and sentiment of mentions. The manner in which particular sources are mentioned in text generated by generative AI is becoming a point of contention in copyright and credibility debates, and the perception has spread that 'being mentioned' in search engines and AI answers determines online presence. In addition, demands for transparency are growing over whether platform algorithms favor or suppress content that mentions a particular object. At the same time, discussions on content moderation—how far mentions of hate speech or disinformation should be permitted—are also active.
