Early Career and Rennes Period
Dembélé made his professional debut for Stade Rennais in the 2015–16 season. In his first season, he scored 12 goals in 26 matches, emerging as a rising star in Ligue 1. His two-footed ability was already a major talking point, as he delivered accurate shots and crosses with both his left and right foot. Early in the 2016–17 season, he continued his strong form with 3 goals and 5 assists in 10 matches, attracting interest from major European clubs.
Borussia Dortmund Period
In the summer of 2016, Dembélé joined Borussia Dortmund for a transfer fee of €15 million. At Dortmund, he immediately established himself as a starter, recording 6 goals and 12 assists in 32 Bundesliga matches. Notably, he won his first trophy in the 2016–17 DFB-Pokal final, leading the team to a 2–1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt. His rapid adaptation and outstanding performances drew attention across Europe, and in the summer of 2017, FC Barcelona signed him for €105 million (potentially rising to €147 million with add-ons), which was the second-highest transfer fee at the time.
FC Barcelona Period
At Barcelona, Dembélé was brought in to fill the void left by Neymar's departure, but he was often criticized for failing to meet expectations due to frequent injuries. In his first season (2017–18), he made only 23 appearances due to a hamstring injury, and recurring muscle problems continued to affect his performance. However, when fit, he showed remarkable form. In the 2018–19 season, he scored 8 goals and provided 5 assists in 29 league matches, and in the 2020–21 Copa del Rey final, he scored the winning goal to secure the title. Over six seasons at Barcelona, he recorded 40 goals and 43 assists in 185 matches, contributing to three La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey titles, and two Supercopa de España titles.
Paris Saint-Germain Period
In the summer of 2023, Dembélé transferred to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) for a fee of €50 million. At PSG, he forms an attacking line with Kylian Mbappé, Marco Asensio, and others, playing in Ligue 1. From the early stages of the 2023–24 season, he showed quick adaptation and established himself as a key player. His dribbling breakthroughs and crosses have become important options in PSG's attacking tactics.
International Career
Dembélé progressed through the French youth teams and made his senior debut in September 2016. At the 2018 FIFA World Cup, he played consistently from the group stage to the final, contributing to France's victory. Notably, in the round of 16 match against Argentina, he scored a decisive goal in stoppage time to secure a 4–3 win. He also played as a starter at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, reaching the final but losing to Argentina on penalties, finishing as runner-up. He also represented France at UEFA Euro 2024.
Latest Developments
In the 2024–25 season, Dembélé has shown more consistent form at PSG. Under manager Luis Enrique, he primarily plays as a right winger, recording 3 goals and 6 assists in 10 Ligue 1 matches (as of November 2024). In October 2024, he extended his contract with PSG until 2028, committing to a long-term future. With a reduced frequency of injuries in recent years, his performance has steadily improved, and he is still regarded as one of the world's best wingers. As of November 2024, he plays a key role in PSG's league title race and UEFA Champions League campaign.
