PyeonhaG-Bus (편하G버스) is a Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) service based on artificial intelligence (AI) and big data technology. Unlike conventional fixed bus routes and schedules, it generates optimal routes in real time based on passengers' on-demand calls. This service maximizes efficiency, particularly in public transport blind spots or areas with low transport demand, while providing customized travel convenience for passengers. PyeonhaG-Bus is gaining attention as a key element in implementing smart cities, and its adoption is expanding across various domestic and international local governments.

Service Operation Principle
When a user inputs their departure point, destination, and desired arrival time via a mobile application, the AI algorithm analyzes multiple passenger requests in real time to determine the optimal route and stops. In this process, it comprehensively considers traffic conditions, vehicle availability, and passenger numbers to minimize waiting time and reduce in-vehicle congestion. Passengers can check the vehicle's real-time location and estimated arrival time through the app, and payments are also processed conveniently within the app.
Technological Foundation
This service is based on three core technologies. First, the AI route optimization engine calculates the optimal route in real time by simultaneously considering numerous variables. Second, the big data analysis system learns from past traffic patterns, weather, and event data to predict demand and pre-deploy vehicles. Third, IoT (Internet of Things) sensors and a cloud platform share vehicle status, location, and passenger boarding information with the central server in real time, enhancing operational efficiency.
Differences from Conventional Public Transport
- Flexibility: With no fixed routes, it can immediately respond to demand fluctuations. For example, if demand in a specific area surges during a certain time, additional vehicles can be deployed.

Domestically, pilot operations are underway in Sejong Special Self-Governing City, Jeju Island, and parts of Gyeonggi Province. In Sejong City, as a national smart city pilot, PyeonhaG-Bus was introduced and significantly improved citizens' commuting convenience. Internationally, similar services such as 'Via' in the United States, 'MOIA' in Germany, and 'Whim' in Finland are active, and PyeonhaG-Bus is evolving through technical partnerships and benchmarking with these services.
Challenges and Limitations
- Initial Investment Costs: Massive upfront costs are required for AI systems, app development, and vehicle purchases.
- Data Privacy: Collecting passengers' location information and movement patterns raises personal data protection issues.
- Demand Volatility: During specific times (late night, holidays), demand may drop sharply, reducing economic viability.
- Legal Regulations: There is potential conflict with existing Passenger Transport Service Act, necessitating a revision of the licensing system.

From 2024 to 2025, PyeonhaG-Bus has shown rapid growth. In the second half of 2024, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced the 'Plan to Activate Demand-Responsive Transport', establishing a legal basis for DRT services and expanding local government subsidies. As a result, as of the first half of 2025, more than 20 local governments nationwide are promoting the adoption of PyeonhaG-Bus. Notably, advancements in AI technology have reduced route optimization time to under one second, and integration with autonomous driving technology is accelerating. In March 2025, a pilot operation of an autonomous PyeonhaG-Bus began in Pangyo, Gyeonggi Province, successfully operating safely without a driver. Additionally, in line with eco-friendly policies, the adoption of electric vehicle-based PyeonhaG-Bus is increasing, contributing to carbon neutrality goals. Internationally, the European Union (EU) is actively encouraging DRT services like PyeonhaG-Bus as part of the 'MaaS (Mobility as a Service)' integrated platform, suggesting potential global market expansion.
