Short Picnic
Overview
A short picnic (짧은 소풍) refers to the activity of traveling to a nearby place for a short period of time—between half a day and one day—to enjoy rest and leisure. Whereas the traditional "picnic" (소풍) was closer to an annual event led by a school or organization, the short picnic is distinguished by being a light outing voluntarily planned by an individual or small group during spare moments in daily life. As urbanization, longer commuting times, the spread of remote work, and a "small luxury" consumption tendency converged, it established itself as a distinct leisure culture in the 2020s.
Key Details
Definition and Scope
A short picnic is defined by three main conditions. First, travel time must be within one hour one way. Second, the total time required must range from half a day (3–5 hours) to no more than one day. Third, it does not presuppose overnight stays. Because of these three conditions, short picnics are often used interchangeably with "day trips" or "nearby outings," but they are distinguished in that they have a weaker sense of purpose than travel and lie on an extension of everyday life. A characteristic feature is that weight is placed on the rhythm-restoring effect of the act of "going out and coming back" itself rather than on the fame of the destination.
Historical Background
The origins of the modern picnic can be found in 19th-century European picnic culture and Japan's ensoku (遠足, excursion). In Korea, group picnics took root with the introduction of the modern school system in the early 1900s, and in the 1970s–80s they became a representative school event alongside school arts festivals and sports days. Afterwards, through discussions of a five-day workweek in the 1990s, the phased implementation of the five-day workweek in 2004, and the full implementation of the five-day school week in 2011, the unit of leisure was subdivided from "vacation" to "weekend" and again to "half a day." The short picnic corresponds to the final stage of this subdivision.
Types and Forms
- Urban type: A type with almost no travel burden, such as downtown parks, riversides, Han River parks, and rooftop gardens. "Lunch picnics" using the lunch hour are also included here.
- Near-suburb type: A type involving visiting arboretums, lakes, valleys, small temples, and the like within an hour's distance by car or public transportation.
- Theme type: A form combined with a specific activity as its purpose, such as flea markets, book picnics, cafe tours, or outings with companion animals.
- Seasonal type: A form of short outing timed to seasonal events such as cherry blossoms, autumn foliage, or the first snow, with demand surging during specific periods.
Preparation and Procedure
The core principle is "lightly, and impromptu." A mat, simple food, water, and a portable battery are enough; cooking tools or a large cooler instead increase the burden of travel and blur the original purpose. Recently, it is common to minimize preparation with convenience-store lunch boxes, sandwiches, and canned drinks. The sequence is selecting a destination → traveling → eating and resting → a light walk → returning home, and it is recommended to intentionally secure "time to do nothing" within the overall schedule.
Psychological and Social Effects
Short picnics have a low planning burden and thus almost no barrier to execution, and even in a short time they provide an attention restoration effect through a change of place. In addition, the short travel distance means low cost and carbon emissions, and the high possibility of repetition makes it easy to settle into a habit. Socially, it is suitable for both "solo picnics" done alone and small gatherings, playing a role in lowering the burden of maintaining relationships.
Recent Trends
As of 2024–2025, short picnics show several distinct changes. First, with the settlement of remote and hybrid work, the "workation walk" form has increased. It is a pattern of finishing morning work and visiting a nearby park in the afternoon. Second, due to climate change, outdoor activities during midday in midsummer have decreased, and "evening picnics" starting around sunset and the use of parks with nighttime opening hours have increased. Third, as local governments have redeveloped riversides and idle land into picnic zones, accessibility has greatly improved. Fourth, with hashtags such as "one-hour picnic" and "picnic after work" spreading on social media, a culture of recording and sharing short leisure has taken root. Fifth, as cases of companies introducing half-day paid leave or "free days" as part of corporate welfare increase, institutional support is also strengthening.
