Overview

A smartphone is an electronic device that combines basic mobile communication functions such as voice calls and text messaging with computer-class computing performance, a large touchscreen, always-on internet connectivity, and an environment for installing and running applications — all in a single portable device. Starting with the arrival of Apple's iPhone in 2007 and Google's Android in 2008, it rapidly displaced conventional feature phones, and by the 2020s it had established itself as the representative personal computing platform used daily by billions of people worldwide and as the largest consumer electronics market.

Definition and Distinction

What sets a smartphone apart from an ordinary mobile phone is that it runs a general-purpose operating system (OS), allowing users to freely extend its functions through app stores. It also comes standard with a multi-touch capacitive touchscreen, a high-performance application processor (AP), various sensors such as GPS, an accelerometer, a gyroscope, an ambient light sensor, and a proximity sensor, a high-resolution camera, and Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a cellular modem. In recent years, biometric authentication (fingerprint and face), NFC-based payments, satellite communication, and on-device AI accelerators have been incorporated as standard features.

History and Development

There were early attempts in the 1990s such as the IBM Simon and the Nokia Communicator, and in the early 2000s BlackBerry and Windows Mobile devices formed the enterprise market. The decisive turning point was the first-generation iPhone announced in January 2007, which changed the usability paradigm with its multi-touch UI, full web browsing, and PC-synced synchronization. Beginning with the HTC Dream (G1) in 2008, Android built an open-source ecosystem, and numerous manufacturers including Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Huawei, and Xiaomi entered the market. In the 2010s the communications generation shifted from 3G to LTE, and in the 2020s to 5G, while video streaming, mobile games, short-form content, and mobile commerce grew explosively.

Hardware Composition

The core components are the SoC (System on Chip), display, battery, camera module, memory (RAM and NAND), and communication modem. Displays moved from LCD to AMOLED and LTPO OLED, and 90–144Hz high refresh rates along with foldable and rollable form factors spread widely. For cameras, multi-lens setups (wide, ultra-wide, telephoto), large sensors, optical image stabilization, and AI-based computational photography became standard. Lithium-ion batteries are the mainstream, and fast charging, wireless charging, and reverse wireless charging have become commonplace.

Operating System and App Ecosystem

Google's Android and Apple's iOS effectively divide the operating system market between them, and together the two platforms account for close to 99% of the market. Android is characterized by openness and manufacturer customization (One UI, MIUI, etc.), while iOS excels through optimization based on the vertical integration of hardware and software and through its privacy policies. The leading app stores are Google Play and the Apple App Store, and in-app payment commissions and monopoly regulation have become major legal and policy issues around the world.

Industry Structure and Market

Annual global shipments have entered a plateau at roughly 1.1 to 1.3 billion units, and as replacement cycles lengthen, manufacturers are shifting their revenue structures toward premiumization, service and subscription revenue, and ecosystem lock-in (linkage with wearables, tablets, and PCs). Samsung Electronics and Apple lead the premium market, while Chinese manufacturers such as Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Honor are expanding their share in mid-to-low-end and emerging markets. In the component ecosystem, Qualcomm, MediaTek, TSMC, Samsung Foundry, Sony (image sensors), and SK hynix and Micron (memory) are key players.

Social Impact

Smartphones have integrated communication, finance, education, healthcare, transportation, and entertainment into a single device, becoming the central tool of digital transformation. At the same time, social side effects are also raised, including the digital divide, youth overdependence, privacy infringement, location data and advertising tracking, growing electronic waste, and issues of rare mineral mining and labor. Governments intervene in the industry through battery safety, personal data protection laws (such as the GDPR), and fair competition regulation of app markets.

Latest Trends

The biggest topic in the smartphone industry in 2024–2025 is on-device AI. With the adoption of Apple Intelligence, Galaxy AI, Google Gemini Nano, and others, real-time translation, generative summarization, photo editing, and voice assistants run directly on hardware NPUs. Accordingly, AP competition has intensified into a race over 3nm and 2nm processes and NPU compute throughput (TOPS) among Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 series, MediaTek's Dimensity, Apple's A series, and Samsung's Exynos. Foldable phones have entered a mature phase centered on improvements in thickness, weight, and creasing, and rumors of Apple's entry into foldables continue to be raised. Satellite communication-based emergency rescue and messaging features are expanding, the transition to eSIM is accelerating, and the EU has mandated a single USB-C charging port since 2024. In communications, 5G-Advanced commercialization and 6G standardization discussions are proceeding in parallel, and in batteries the trend combines high energy density materials such as silicon-carbon anodes with recycling regulation (the EU Battery Regulation). Meanwhile, heat and power efficiency issues arising from the spread of AI features, approaches to handling personal data, and copyright issues over generative AI training data are emerging as new regulatory issues.
