Southern Region

Overview

Southern Region (Korean: 남부; 南部) is a general geographic term referring to the southern part of a specific country or region. Beyond a simple directional concept, it forms a distinct identity according to historical, cultural, and economic context. Representative examples include the Southern United States, the southern Korean Peninsula, and Southern Europe, each with different cultural characteristics. 'Southern Region' often exhibits characteristics contrasting with the North in various elements such as climate, agriculture, language, and political orientation.

The Southern Region as a Geographic Concept

In geography, the southern region refers to an area closer to the equator and is generally at a lower latitude, resulting in a warmer climate. For this reason, southern regions often have high agricultural productivity and environments favorable for cultivating subtropical and tropical crops. However, the classification of 'southern' is not an absolute standard but is defined by relative position within a specific territory, so each country has a different way of setting its boundaries.

The Southern United States

It is one of the most widely known examples of 'the South' and includes Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and others. Historically, it formed a unique culture through the plantation economy, slavery, and the American Civil War (1861–1865). It is characterized by soul food, jazz, blues, and country music, a Protestant-centered religious culture, and a strong regional identity. After the 20th century, it experienced the civil rights movement and changes in industrial structure, and population inflows became active.

The Southern Korean Peninsula and East Asia

The southern Korean Peninsula generally has a complex coastline and a mild climate, and it grew into a center of agriculture, fisheries, and modern industrialization. Port cities such as Busan, Ulsan, and Yeosu developed there. In East Asia as well, southern China (including Guangdong and Fujian) is clearly distinguished from the north in terms of dialects, food, and maritime exchange, and became a major base of the overseas Chinese network.

Southern Europe and the Southern Hemisphere

Southern Europe (including Italy, Spain, Greece, and Portugal) is contrasted with Northern Europe by its Mediterranean climate, cultivation of olives and grapes, and Catholic culture. The Southern Hemisphere is a vast region south of the equator, where the seasons are opposite to those of the Northern Hemisphere, and it includes Australia, New Zealand, most of South America, and southern Africa.

Common Characteristics

  • Climate: Generally warm and humid, or Mediterranean/subtropical
  • Economy: Agriculture accounts for a relatively high share, and tourism and port industries are developed
  • Culture: Local color distinct from the North in language, food, and religion
  • Politics: Often strongly conservative, or conversely, marked by a clear regionalist party structure

Recent Trends

As of 2024–2025, 'southern' regions are undergoing changes in various fields. The Southern United States continues its 'Sun Belt' growth due to net population inflow and expanded investment in manufacturing (especially semiconductors and electric vehicles), with Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, and others emerging as new industrial hubs. Meanwhile, as damage from heat waves, hurricanes, and droughts caused by climate change is concentrated in southern regions, water management and disaster response have emerged as major policy challenges. In Southern Europe, overcrowded tourism, housing shortages, and an agricultural crisis caused by drought are becoming social issues, while Southern Hemisphere countries continue discussions around climate justice and diversifying resource exports. In addition, the spread of remote work and population movement are acting as factors reshaping the traditional image of the 'South.'
